Hazel Dawn Downey

Obit Hazel Dawn DowneyOur sweet wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Hazel Dawn Downey, left this earthly existence on Dec. 3, 2015. She was born on Jan. 5, 1931, to David Alonzo and Hazel Isabel Nelson Thomas in Spanish Fork, Utah. She grew up and attended schools in Spanish Fork, graduating from Spanish Fork High School and taking some classes at Brigham Young University.

She married Lawrence Maurice Downey on Oct. 24, 1952, in Spanish Fork after five years of courtship. They were later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on Oct. 24, 1972, on their 20th wedding anniversary. Together they had three sons: Richard, Brent and Scott.

After Maurice graduated from BYU, they moved to Glendora, California, to begin his career as an elementary school teacher. Later they settled in Tooele, Utah, where they have lived for the past 57 years. She began working for the Tooele School District as a teacher’s aide and also did substitute teaching until she was moved into the Title 1 Reading Programs. She worked for the school district for 23 years before retiring.

Over the years, her job history also included babysitting, picking produce, working at the Sears catalog department, The Barbizon (where they made women’s lingerie), and the Del Monte Cannery. She was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many capacities, including Primary and Young Women’s at both the ward and stake levels. Her special love was Girls’ Camp, where she was a leader or participant for 17 years. She loved her girls and they loved her. She was always up for some fun.

She and her husband spent 10 years as workers in the Salt Lake Temple. It was always a sacred place for her as she, her parents and her children were all married there. She lived for her children and supported them in all of their interests. All three were involved in band and she and her husband became perpetual chaperones for band trips. Lawrence also obtained his chauffeur’s license so he could drive the bus. Many band students always wanted to be on Mamma and Papa Downey’s bus. Her house became a focus for her kids’ friends. Many a summer the friends practically lived there, sleeping in the backyard almost every night. She had a fun streak and would often bake cookies that were sabotaged with a piece of cardboard in them or sweetened with Tabasco sauce. She was also noted for her skill in making and decorating cakes for all occasions, including some spectacular wedding cakes.

She and Maurice loved to travel. Yellowstone was a special favorite. Hardly a year went by without seeing them heading out to Old Faithful or Lower Falls. She first went to Disneyland the year after it opened and visited frequently after that. She loved church history tours, her trip to Hawaii, going to Wendover, Mesquite, or Laughlin, or just going for a drive to see the fall leaves.

She is survived by Maurice, her husband of 63 years; sons Richard (Melody), Brent (Bethany) and Scott; eight grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother Rulon (Vonda) Thomas of St. George, Utah, and many in-laws, nieces, and nephews. There will be a viewing on Tuesday, Dec. 8 from 6-8 p.m. at Tate Mortuary, 110 S. Main St. in Tooele. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 9 at 11 a.m. at the Tooele Stake Center, 253 S. 200 East, with a viewing prior from 9:30 a.m.-10:30 a.m.

Obit Alfred K. (Jim) Keetch 1Alfred K. (Jim) Keetch passed from this mortal existence on Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2015, due to complications of emphysema. Obit Alfred K. (Jim) Keetch 2Jim was surrounded by his loving family that gathered to show support, demonstrate a deep love for him and to celebrate the incredible life he had lived. Some may say that passing during the Christmas season is terrible, but his loving family believes otherwise because of the Christlike giving and caring shared by so many that is reflective of this time of year. Jim was the firstborn son of Alfred Martell and Buela Kofford Keetch and the third of six children to include VaLoy, Merla, Dee, Boyd and Clea. He grew up in Utah County, where he participated in sports and choir. Jim graduated from Orem High in 1952 and hitchhiked for two days to Dugway Proving Ground to seek a job with the federal government. He worked at Dugway for five years, rising through the ranks quickly to a leadership position before being drafted into the U.S. Army in 1957. Jim went to basic training at Ft. Dix, New Jersey and was later stationed in Ft. Monmouth, New Jersey, and Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he met Kitsy Cramer for the first time. He then shipped out to Siegelsbach, Germany, for a year. After a year in Germany, he returned to Arkansas to be released from military service. From there, he made his way back to Albuquerque to see Kitsy again and proposed shortly thereafter. They were married in July of 1959 and made their home back at U.S. Army Dugway Proving Ground for the next 42 years. Jim and Kitsy are the proud parents of Alfred Jim (Anita) Keetch, Jeff (Debra Wright) Keetch and Cathy (Jeff Atkinson) Keetch. They are also the grandparents of Ashlee Keetch, Kylee (Ian) Larsen, Danny Keetch and Shelby Keetch, as well as the great-grandparents of Avery Layne Larsen. Jim worked in the test center at U.S. Army Dugway Proving Ground and throughout his career, he held many positions performing testing on systems and equipment that benefited U.S. warfighters throughout the world. His organizational skills and attention to detail were impeccable and recognized several times throughout his career. He retired in 1991, having worked a total of 39 years for the federal government. Kitsy was not yet ready to retire, so Jim worked another 10 years with Lockheed Martin before he and Kitsy officially retired in 2001. In retirement, Jim and Kitsy were able to travel the world. They journeyed together to Canada, Mexico, Panama, Austria, Germany, France, England, Switzerland, Puerto Rico, and the USA from west to east. They enjoyed time together, benefiting from their years of hard work, and more importantly spending time together enjoying the journey. Jim and Kitsy’s marriage was solemnized in the LDS Salt Lake City Temple on Dec. 13, 2013, further blessing their relationship and promises of eternal companionship and allowing their precious journey to continue. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Boyd and Dee, and his sisters VaLoy Menlove and Clea Rasmussen. He is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchild. He is also survived by his sister Merla Bolling, sisters-in-law Jane Keetch, Martha Keetch, Donna Dow and Judy Cramer and brother-in-law Danny (Norma) Cramer, as well as his many nieces and nephews in Utah and Indiana. We want to express special thanks to Intermountain Health Care and Hospice, and particularly Suzie Clark, who provided such wonderful care for Jim. We also want to thank the incredible members of the Parkway 7th Ward for their love, concern and generosity during these difficult times. She was born in Goshen, Utah, on May 11, 1925, to I. Bernard and Elgie Steele Bale. She married the love of her life, E. Keith Ahlstrom, on April 5, 1947, and they made their home in St. John, Utah, where they raised their children. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. She held many positions in the church, but her favorite was being a temple worker with her husband. She owned and operated the St. John Merc. until she started driving a school bus for Tooele County. Her routes included Ophir, Vernon, Pine Canyon and Erda, where she made lifelong friends and is still known as “Grandma.” She will always be remembered for being “terrible” whenever you asked her how she was. She was also well-known throughout the community for her bread-making and cooking skills. No one who ever stopped at her house was ever allowed to leave hungry. In her family, she was affectionately known as the “snake charmer,” as there was not a fussy baby she couldn’t handle. She took great joy in being called “Grandma Fossil,” because the joke was that she was older than dirt. She wore the title proudly. As someone who never left you wondering what she was thinking, her feisty, spunky personality will truly be missed. Grandma, always remember, “We love you a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck.” She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Farrel, sister Shirlene, brother Albion Dwaine, granddaughter Mindy and her husband. She is survived by her children, Verl (Sherrie) Ahlstrom, Floyd (Monique) Ahlstrom and Wendy (Gary) Lloyd; brother, Shirl Bale; grandchildren Griffin (Amy-Dylin, Kaycie, Wyatt) Ahlstrom, Nate Anderson, Kari (Shane-Shayna, Bryce) Thompson, Melissa (Scott-Taz, Asher, Finley, Will) Adamson, Haylee (Brandon-Tyce, Haven) Bennett and Lacey (Dewey-Link) McNeill. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2015, at the Rush Valley Ward chapel at 11 a.m., with a viewing from 9:30-10:45 a.m. Interment will be in the St. John Cemetery. We would like to thank the staff at Cottage Glen and Canyon Home Health and Hospice for the kind, loving and tender way they treated Granny. It will never be forgotten.
