Obit Claude Edward Roberts 1Claude Edward Roberts returned to his Heavenly Father on Oct. 29, 2015, surrounded by his loving family. Obit Claude Edward Roberts 2He was born Aug. 1, 1923, in Grantsville, Utah, to Edward Abraham Roberts and Gladys Christine Eliason. He was raised in Grantsville and graduated from Grantsville High School. He attended the University of Utah for one year. In 1944 he married his sweetheart, Josephine Ellis, in the Salt Lake Temple. In the spring of 1945, he went into the Merchant Marines. He returned home to work at the Tooele Army Depot. He got laid off for awhile because of reduction in force and went to work at Morton Salt for 2-3 years, then went back to TOD and worked there for 30 years. He retired Oct. 19, 1979. In 1966, he opened a meat-packing plant called Tooele Valley Meats — something he always wanted to do. He turned it over to his son, Eddie. His wife passed away Oct. 9, 2000. He is survived by his children, Dick Roberts (Margie), Mary Jo White (Bud, deceased), Gaye Shields (Versal, deceased), Eddie Roberts (Dawn), LeeAnn Saunders (Gale). He had 53 grandchildren, 62 great-grandchildren, and 33 great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, a sister Lucy Roberts Sandberg and her husband Farrell Sandberg and two sons-in law. He loved living in Grantsville and never missed the Old Folks Sociable through the years. He was proud to be a part of this town and was the Grand Marshal in the 4th of July Parade in 2015 with a good friend, Val Smith. Funeral services will be held at the Grantsville LDS Chapel at 410 Shelley Lane, Grantsville, Utah, Saturday at noon with a viewing from 10-11:30 a.m. Interment will be at the Grantsville City Cemetery. Dr. Woodrow Thomas Lash, Corporal

Obit Dr. Woodrow Thomas Lash, CorporalDr. Woodrow Thomas Lash passed away on Oct. 26, 2015. He was born in Dover, New Jersey, to Woodrow Pershing Lash and Rose Marcella Goodenough. He was a civil servant for over 42 years with a final assignment as a senior chemist at Deseret Chemical Depot. Woodrow served in the Army, USA Chemical Corps division from February 1964-1967 and received the Efficiency Medal of Honor and the National Defense Medal. In 2006, he received the Commander’s Award for Civilian Service. He has written and published the book “The History of United States Chemical Warfare in World War I.” He received the following degrees: Doctorate of Philosophy and Master of Arts from Hawthorne University; Bachelor of Science and Associate of Arts from Brigham Young University. Woodrow is survived by his children, Rose (Shelly) Loveland, Tracy McFarland, Tricia Funes and Woodrow (Jamie) Lash. He has 11 grandchildren, his brother, Thomas Lash and his sister, Deborah Lash. He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Wayne Gregory Lash. His hobbies included pool, golf and model-building. His funeral was held at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary on Friday, Oct. 30.

Betty England Henwood Syddall

Obit Betty England Henwood SyddallBetty England Henwood Syddall, age 88, passed away after a short illness on Oct. 27, 2015. She was born in Clifton, Arizona, on March 8, 1927, the fourth of five children and only daughter of Moray and Violet L. England. Her mother passed away when Betty was 14 years old. Betty later met and married Orin Henwood in the Salt Lake Temple and made their home in Tooele. Orin passed away in 1960. She then met Howard Syddall, a widower with three children, and they eventually married and lived in the family home on 500 North in Tooele. Howard passed away in 2006. Though having no children of her own, Betty happily told friends of her 10 grandchildren and 20+ great-grandchildren. Betty was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in many callings throughout her life. Betty was preceded in death by her husbands as well as brothers Ray, Harold, Jay, and Keith. She is survived by her brother Roger England of Roy, stepchildren Gary (Rae) of Denver, Richard (Ruth) of St. George and Karen (John) of Pleasant Grove, and all grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held on Saturday, Oct. 31 at the LDS Tooele 8th Ward. Interment was in the Tooele City Cemetery. Funeral Directors: Utah Valley Mortuary. Obit Theresa Lou HammondTheresa Lou Hammond, 52, of Grantsville, Utah, passed away Nov. 1, 2015. The daughter of Helen Beck and Steven Kubat, she passed away at her home in Grantsville after a long battle with cancer. Her mother Helen Beck preceded her in death. Her loving husband, Brad J. Hammond and three childrenm Tiffany M. Nalley, Tasha N. Herrera and James Herrera survive her. Six grandchildren — Isaiah Medina, Ian and Illias Miller, Milani Castleberry, Robert Watt and Raylin Herrera — also survive her. Theresa worked as a medical support assistant at Dugway Proving Ground Health Clinic until December of 2014. She loved being with people and was the life of the party. She loved the holidays, especially Halloween with all her beautiful costumes, as well Christmas with all the wonderful decorating and being around the ones she loved. She will be greatly missed and loved by her family and friends.  Services will be open to just the family.

Obit Billy Joe HarrisonBilly Joe Harrison, beloved husband, and dedicated father and grandfather returned home to his sweetheart and oldest son on Friday, Oct. 30, 2015, at the age of 68. Born on Aug. 8, 1947, to Jack Harrison and Lucillie Tapp in Kenilworth, Utah, BJ graduated from Cyprus High School in 1966. Immediately after high school, he was drafted into the Army to serve in the Vietnam War where he rose to the rank of SP5. He returned home, where he attended the College of Eastern Utah to play baseball, and graduated with an associate’s degree in science. He began his career with the Tooele Army Depot in 1970 and retired in 2012 after 42 years and one month of service. On Nov. 6, 1981, he married the love of his life, Lola Dee Abernethy, and they were sealed for time and eternity in the Salt Lake Temple in 1991. BJ was preceded in death by his sweetheart, Lola Dee Harrison, and his son, William Dion Harrison. BJ served his country and many others in his community with countless hours of coaching, assistant coaching, and service towards the less fortunate. He loved the outdoors, being with his loved ones and teaching youth in any athletic capacity. He married his dear friend Debra Oborn on October 11, 2014. He will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by his children, Jen (Shannon) Brooks, Ryan (Corrine) Harrison, Bryan (Valerie) Holdbrook and Amanda (Brian) Cole. He cherished his 15 precious grandchildren Jordan, Sierra, Brad, Veronica, Alion, Dallon, Harrison, London, Indie, Kigh, Brylie , Liberty, Coalton, Kade, and Kasen. He was survived by his loving wife Debra Oborn Harrison, her children and all of her grandchildren, who all loved their Grandpa BJ.  We love you as big as the sky! Memorial Ssrvices will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 7, with a viewing from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the Erda LDS church house located at 323 E. Erda Way.  Friends may call Friday, Nov. 6 at Tate Mortuary, located at 110 S. Main Street in Tooele from 6-8 p.m. Interment will be at Redwood Memorial Estates, 6500 S. Redwood Road.

Charles Edward Townsend

Obit Charles Edward TownsendCharles Edward Townsend passed away Tuesday, Nov. 3, from complications as a result of brain cancer. He was surrounded by family and friends at the time of his death. Charles was born Jan. 1, 1943, in LaCrosse, Wisconsin, to Lawrence and Elaine Townsend. After graduating from Grantsville High School, he served four years in the United States Air Force. After military service, he married his sweetheart, Kaye Fletcher Townsend, in the Salt Lake Temple. They were married 48 years and raised seven wonderful children, who through the years brought 20 wonderful grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was a wonderful, loving and dedicated husband and father. Chuck worked for the Tooele Army Depot and retired after 38 years. During that time he also served for two years in the Air Force Reserve. Following his retirement, he worked for Tooele County School District for 12 years as a school bus driver, a job he really enjoyed. The most important thing to Chuck was his love for the gospel and his family where much devotion was given. He loved being outdoors fishing, hunting, camping and traveling; always wanting to see what’s around the next curve in the road or over the next hill. He also had a great love for motorcycles and four-wheeling and enjoying the beautiful outdoors. He is survived by his wife Kaye; children Cindy (Glenn) Peers, Tammie (Ted) Crawford, Ryan and Kristi Eccles, Terry (Kristi) Townsend, Troy Townsend, Talesha (Austin) Romans and Tara (Tomas) Reyes; 20 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; brothers Ralph (Jody) Hager and Travis (Jean) Hager; sisters Elaine Bernier and Kaye (Mike) Gajda; and many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his father Lawrence Townsend, daughter Tonia Eccles, brother Kevin Hager, mother Elaine Hager and step-father Orson “Hap” Hager. A viewing will be held on Friday, Nov. 6 at the Grantsville West Stake Center at 115 E. Cherry Street from 6-8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 7 at 2 p.m. at the same location with a viewing an hour before. Vertis Carter Jr.

Obit Vertis Carter JrVertis Carter Jr. passed away Nov. 5, 2015, due to heart failure. He was born in Tennessee on Feb. 9, 1928, and attended school in Dallas, Texas. He served three years in the U.S. Marine Corps in World War II in the 1st and 3rd division in the South Pacific. He moved to Utah with his mom and three sisters in 1949. He met his beautiful bride, Dorothy Jean Lougy, and they were married in March 1951. He worked hard as a contractor on commercial buildings, housing projects, streets, cement work, and roofing. He built his own home on Broadway. He manufactured camping trailers in 1969. He ran for mayor of Mt. Pleasant in 1981. He owned Town and Country Car Wash and Laundromat in Mt. Pleasant. He loved hunting, fishing, camping, horseback riding and bow hunting. He is survived by his two children, Mickie and Randy; seven grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Thank you Mom and Dad for always being the best examples of who, how, when, and where. You raised your children and grandchildren to know who we are, how to act and react, when to take a step back or two steps forward, and you have always led the way to where we will all end up, as an eternal family. A visitation will be held Monday, Nov. 9, 2015, at Tate Mortuary, located at 110 S. Main Street, from 10-11 a.m. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. in the Tooele City Cemetery.

Obit James McKayJames McKay passed away peacefully at the age of 78 on Thursday, Nov. 5, 2015, of natural causes. Jim was born Nov. 13, 1936, in Stockton, Utah, to James and Ophelia McKay. He was the last surviving member in a family of 10 children. He served four years in the United States Air Force, stationed in England. He was employed at the Tooele Smelter, Tooele City, and MagCorp. He loved being outdoors, fishing, and camping. He is survived by children Connie Searle, Daniel McKay (Sandra) and stepson Ron Oliverez; seven grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and his dog, Boozer. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Viola (Dot) Mallet and Zola Bussell, and brothers Vern, LaDell (Mick), Alex (Mac), Jack, Paul, Earl and Donny McKay. A memorial service will be held Thursday, Nov. 12, 2015, at Tate Mortuary. Visitation from 10:30-11:30 a.m.; a graveside service will follow at the Grantsville City Cemetery at noon. A special thanks to the Central Utah Veterans Home in Payson for the kind and loving care they provided.

Obit Fred Le Grand Hale 1Fred Le Grand Hale returned home to his Heavenly Father on Monday, Nov. 9, 2015. He was born Oct. 1, 1930, to Earl and Millie Hale. Obit Fred Le Grand Hale 2After graduating from Grantsville High School, he married his beloved Elaine Hansen. They were married June 29, 1950, in the Salt Lake Temple. Shortly afterward, he served in the Korean War. He loved his country and was honored to serve. Following his service he worked at the Tooele Army Depot where, he retired in 1987. In 1977, he started Hale Construction Company and together with his sons, Craig and Ken, built over 100 homes throughout Tooele County, and 80 projects and chapels for the LDS church. He was born and raised in Grantsville, and dearly loved this community. He served as mayor from 1983-1989. He was devoted to his Heavenly Father and served in various callings throughout his life. He was generous and kind and always looking for opportunities to lend a hand. He loved fishing and camping with his family, and the summer vacations to Yellowstone Park and Flaming Gorge. In 1979, he and his sons built a cabin in Scofield, where years of treasured family memories were made. He will be deeply missed by family and friends, especially his wife, Elaine, of 65 years; sons Craig and Ken (Jennie); grandchildren Heidi (Chris), Shelbie (Jake), Shamas, Brady (Tamera), Ryan (Carolynn), Lacee (Scott) and Austin (Kristy); 13 great-grandchildren; sister Barbara (Dan) Anderson and sister-in-law Sandra (Gary) McCluskey. He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers Harvey, Nathan, Ed and Ivan, and sisters Fern, Rosalyn, Edith, Blanch, Lorna and Millie. A viewing will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 11, from 6-8 p.m. at the Grantsville West Stake Center at 115 East Cherry Street. Funeral services will be held Thursday, Nov. 12, at noon at the same location with a viewing from 10:30-11:30 a.m. prior to the funeral. Obit Kelsey Alee PackardOur little Kelsey Alee Packard passed away Nov. 9, 2015, at the age of 28. She was born March 18, 1987, to Larry Packard and Julie Packard Goins. Kelsey’s life was filled with many adventures and she has known and loved many wonderful people and had a special bond with her big brother Ryan. She has overcome many struggles in life, except for this last one, which was too much for her little body to handle. Kelsey graduated from Grantsville High School in 2006 where she was involved in Dance Club and Key Club. She leaves behind her father Larry Packard (Faith), mother Julie Goins (Mike), brother Ryan Packard and his daughter Kaitlen Packard (her niece), sister Stephanie Steward (Bryan), sister Jennifer Atwood (Paul), brother Benard Gurule, sister Marie McHenry (Hank) and sister (BFF) Jamie Ruttenbur (Chris), nieces and nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles and grandparents. She will be laid to rest at the Stansbury Park Cemetery and a celebration of her life will be announced at a later date.

Obit Ferdnando James HollowayOur beloved son and brother, age 17, was born Sept. 4, 1998. He is survived by his mother, father, brothers, sisters, grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. His wings were ready, but our hearts were not. He was taken way too young. He had such a big heart and left an imprint on everyone he came in contact with. He will be truly missed. Obit Milton James McConnachie Jr. 2Milt was faithful and loyal to his country, serving honorably for 23 years in the United States Navy and finishing his career as a Chief Petty Officer. His passion for his country was only surpassed by his love for God, family, and friends. Milt was an active member of the New Life Christian Fellowship in Tooele. He enjoyed nature, often spending time hunting and fishing. He touched the lives of many and will be greatly missed. Milt is survived by his wife, Debbie McConnachie; children James (Shannon) McConnachie, Kelly Beutler, Kenny (Kimm) McConnachie, Monica (Casey) Cleveland and Jessica Parenteau (Casey); grandchildren Clayton, Savannah, Jack, Ruby, Dean, Evan, Kaylee, and Jayde; siblings Scott, Lindey, Loretta, and Holly; along with several “adopted” children and grandchildren. Milt is preceded in death by his late parents Milton James McConnachie Sr. (Patricia) and his sister Jerri. Services honoring Milt’s life will be held on Saturday, Nov. 28, 2015, at Tate Mortuary, 110 S. Main, Tooele, Utah. A viewing will be held from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Memorial services will follow beginning at 1 p.m.

Obit Opal Haycock ClarkThe Lord took our angel home with him on Nov. 27, 2015. Opal Haycock Clark was born on Aug. 27, 1933, to Rex and Edna Haycock in Escalante, Utah. She lived most of her childhood in Lehi, then moved to Salt Lake City and later moved in with her daughter in Tooele. She was surrounded by family and friends when she passed. Opal married William (Bill) Clegg and later divorced. She married Rex Clark and later divorced. She was a member of the LDS Church. She loved to travel, cruising the world, spending time with her family and making memories! Everyone who met her loved her; she left an impact on several individuals and she enjoyed making others smile. She loved her crafts, quilting, crocheting, sewing, western shirts, leather belts and Trichem Embroidery. She is survived by her loving sister Karran Danielson; daughters Carol (Henry) Mortenson and Larene (Michael) Rachiele; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, sister Leora Barney, brother JR Rex Haycock, sister-in-law Betty Haycock and brother-in-law James Danielson. Funeral services will be held Thursday, Dec. 3, 2015, at 11 a.m. in the Wing Mortuary, 118 East Main, Lehi, Utah. Family and friends may call Wednesday evening from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the LDS Chapel located at 2005 N. Obit Kenneth Elliott DuBoisKen passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, Nov. 19, 2015, of age-related illness. Ken was born Sept. 20, 1922, in Salt Lake City, Utah, the son of a street car conductor, Joseph L. DuBois, and Edith Corbin DuBois. He married Amelia Rachel Froscheiser on March 30, 1943, and together they had three sons. He joined the Army Air Force in December 1942 and departed for Europe in July 1943. He received a Bronze Star for his actions in Northern France and proudly served his country until October 1945. After the war, he continued to serve his country as a civil service employee at Tooele Army Depot. He retired in January 1978 as director of personnel. He is survived by wife “Rae,” son Brent and spouse Joaquina, daughter-in-law Cathy; grandchildren Doug, Austin, Michelle, and Brianna; and great-grandchildren Kelsee, Hunter, and Chase. Ken was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and one sister, as well as sons Bob and Bill. This was Ken’s favorite time of year, especially Christmas Eve, when he could celebrate the holiday season decorating and enjoying all of his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, as well as all friends getting together for church and gathering at his home for food and visiting. Enjoy the holidays, set up your tree and put the train around it. Visitation will be held at Tate Mortuary on Sunday, Nov. 29 from 4-6 p.m. Services honoring Ken’s life will be held on Monday, Nov. 30 at Mountain of Faith Lutheran Church at 11 a.m. Graveside services will follow.

Obit Karren Dawn Tripp EasterlyOn Nov. 23, 2015, our beloved wife and mother Karren Dawn Tripp Easterly passed away at the Pioneer Hospital while battling her long fight with illness. She was born in Casper, Wyoming, on Nov. 4, 1964. Her happiness in life came from the love of crocheting, cooking, fishing, camping and spending time with her family and her two dogs. She inspired many by her strength, love and courage. She was always there to help others in need. She was loved and will be missed dearly by her parents James Tripp (Sue) and Maureen Cios (Ronald); husband Paul Easterly; children Michael Evans (Kerri), Mellissa Evans (Michael), Zach Easterly, Josh Easterly and Meagan Atherly (Jake); her three sisters Maryanne Nelson (Kenneth), Leslie Anderson (Darin) and Angie Parker (David); her two brothers Johnathon Tripp (Leslie) and James W. Tripp; and four grandchildren, Jordan and Peyton Evans and Elle and Camden VanWagoner. Services will be held Saturday, Dec. 5, 2015, at Tate Mortuary, 110 S. Main Street, Tooele, UT 84074. Visitation at 10 a.m. and memorial services at 11 a.m.
