Obit Grant Ask GundersenGrant Ask Gundersen, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather, returned home on Aug. 12, 2015. Often his posterity heard him sing, “Have faith, hope, and charity. That’s the way to way to live successfully.” His 96 years of life certainly reflected those words. Grant was born April 4, 1919, to Orson Wilford Gundersen and Ingeborg Johansen Terjesen in Idaho Falls, Idaho. He was proud of his Norwegian heritage. Grant grew up in the hard years of the Depression. He had five brothers and three sisters and remembered lean years of a lot of hard work and not much money. From these experiences, he was especially aware of the “least of these.” He was generous with his time and his resources, often giving money to those who he felt were struggling. He and his brothers worked hard plastering but they also knew how to have fun. Four of the boys organized a quartet (Grant sang baritone) and they traveled around singing for various events. Grant loved to sing throughout his life. Grant and his brothers loved acrobatics and athletics. The Gundersen brothers’ basketball team won the stake church tournament most years. He married his sweetheart, Marjorie Mae Calvert, on June 18, 1941, in the Salt Lake Temple. The first years of their marriage were spent moving from place to place as Grant enlisted in the Air Corps while World War II was raging. He served his country for four years. In his later years, he enjoyed studying the Constitution and liked to talk about American ideals and government. For 15 years, Grant worked as a building contractor with his brother in Holladay, Utah. He built the houses where he and Marjie raised their three sons and five daughters, of whom he was very proud. Grant strived to follow the admonition of Jesus Christ to love the Lord with all your heart, might, mind, and strength and to love his neighbor. He was devoted to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, loved to study the gospel and served in the bishopric twice, stake high council and as a temple worker in the Jordan River Temple for 18 years.  Grant loved his family. He taught his children how to work hard and the importance of getting along with each other. He loved to hear his daughters sing and would often join in. His family will remember his strong will, honesty and his love of fun activities and contests. He and Marjie were great supporters of athletic events of their children and grandchildren. Grandchildren will fondly remember “Grandpa Day” activities. As age made it harder for his athletic body to do what he loved, we will remember his devotion to Marjie, his patience, and his positive attitude through health trials. He never complained. His proudest accomplishments were his eight children: Sherry (Earl) Larson, Vicky (Ernie) Matthews, Sandy (Steve) Allred, Kristy (Craig) Bleazard, Jerry (Audrey) Gundersen, Cindy (Edward) Cole, Kim (Tammy) Gundersen and Tarvy (Priscilla) Gundersen. He has 47 grandchildren, 135 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren. We are very proud to be counted among his surviving posterity and will miss him dearly. He is also survived by his brothers David and John. Grant was preceded in death by his beloved wife Marjie, daughter Sherry, his parents Orson and Ingeborg, brothers Orson, Thomas and Joseph, and sisters Edith, Dorothy and Mary. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Aug. 15, 2015, at the Grantsville Stake Center, 550 E Durfee St. Friends and family may call from 6-8 p.m., Friday, Aug. 14 at the Grantsville Stake Center. The family will also greet friends 10:30-11:30 a.m. prior to the Saturday service. Interment will be in the Grantsville City Cemetery.

Obit Gregory David BronderGregory David Bronder climbed his highest climb back to his Heavenly Father on Aug. 15, 2015, and is now watching over his family and friends from the highest peak. Greg was an avid outdoorsman who passed away doing what he loved most. Our hearts are broken, but we are filled with the knowledge and peace that we will be with him again. Families CAN be together FOREVER! Greg was born in Youngstown, Ohio on March 16, 1975, to Bill and Joyce (Cushey) Bronder. He met and married the love of his life, Kayla Colovich, on Feb. 5, 2000. Greg and Kayla were blessed with two wonderful children, Griffen (8) and Sophia (5). He adored spending time with his wife and children. They were his pride and joy. Greg’s love of hiking took him to many great heights, even being able to name one of them Griffen Peak after his son. He graduated from Bowling Green State University with a BS in environmental health. He received his master’s degree from the University of Utah in public health. Greg was a lifelong Seattle Seahawks fan and a proud Utah Ute who “bled red.” He was an accomplished drummer and loved going to see his favorite band, Rush. Greg was a playful, goofy tease, yet serious and tender-hearted. He loved and served his community as a Tooele City volunteer firefighter. Greg was truly a mountaineer; there wasn’t a name of a peak that he did not know. He was one county-high point shy of climbing every county high point in the state of Utah. He was really looking forward to climbing Mount Rainier with his buddies. He loved the mountains and everything they had to offer. Greg loved the Lord and was a quiet, humble servant. He would often seek solace on the top of a mountain. It was here, that he truly felt close to God. Greg had a deep love for his fellowmen and was truly one of the “good guys.” Greg leaves many broken-hearted people, his wife, two children, his parents, his brother Geoff (Kristina); his grandmother Violet Thompson; his father- and mother-in-law, Kay and Carole Colovich; brothers- and sister-in-law Mac, Sam (Bella), Ann (Paul) and Jed (Shelly); as well as numerous adoring nieces, nephews, “Good Buds” and countless friends. He was born on Feb. 2, 1926, in Tooele, Utah, to Isaac Samuel and Sarah Jane (Millward) Walters. He grew up on South 100 West and ran around with his “First West Buddies” — Dick Pascoe, Lavar Adams and Clayne Shepherd. He married Alma Jean White on March 16, 1947, and was sealed in the Salt Lake Temple to her on Sept. 17, 1951. He is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, living almost his entire life in the Tooele Fourth Ward. He joined the U.S. Navy right out of high school and went to technical school in Great Lakes, Illinois, and Mare Island, California. He was stationed at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii after the bombing and was there when the war officially ended. He was always very proud of his military service. He worked at Tooele Army Depot his entire career — first as a painter, then as a fireman, and later as the fire chief. He also worked other jobs while working at the depot — he poured cement with Dick Henwood, he worked for Sike Gillette at his Texaco station and he painted houses. He always worked hard and provided well for his wife and their four daughters, Bobbie Lou, Sharon Kay, Laurie Dawn, and Terri Lyn. He was fire chief at the Tooele Army Depot from 1978 to 1981, and chief with the Tooele City Volunteer Fire Department from 1969 to 1970. He loved being a fireman and truly considered them his brothers. He was so proud that his grandson, Matt Burdine, became a Tooele volunteer fireman. He loved to hunt and fish with Chuck Gillespie, “Butch” Porter and “Bump” Dunlavy, who are all waiting for him on the “other side” so they can go catch a big one. At one time he boasted that he knew everybody in Tooele! He has had a long, wonderful life and we are so glad that the time has come that he can join his sweetheart, Alma Jean, in Heaven. She passed away in 1995 and he has missed her every day since then. He is survived by his daughters, all of Tooele: Bobbie Lou Anderson, Sharon Kay Burdine, Laurie Dawn Argyle (David), and Terri Lyn Fuell (Sandy). He also is the proud grandfather to 13 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and 21 great-great grandchildren. He leaves quite a legacy behind here on earth to continue to make his name honorable.  He is survived by his sister, Vivian Groscost; sisters-in-law, Beverly White, Mary Jo White, and Bonna Walters; and brother-in-law, Sterling White. He is preceded in death by his wife, Alma Jean; his parents Isaac and Sarah; his brother, Jack Walters; and his granddaughter, Rachel Fait. We will also remember the time he borrowed a cast iron wolf out of a neighbor’s front yard; the time he and Trevor left the kitchen faucet running in a plugged sink while they watched Dylan play video games in the basement, causing the house to flood; and the time he knocked a chandelier off the ceiling with a basketball; as well as the music he was always singing, listening to or dancing to.  Ryan worked for his best bud Ryan Bowen at Pure Water Solutions. Ryan proudly became a Tooele City honorary firefighter, which he said was the best day of his life. Ryan’s optimism was contagious. He co-founded “The Herd,” a student group dedicated to cheering on Tooele High’s sports teams, to spread that optimism. He smiled at everyone, and they always smiled back. And during the last year of his life, he reminded his friends and family to stay positive, expressly stating that we need to focus on enjoying our time together rather than worrying about how much time is left. As per Ryan’s request, there will not be a viewing. His funeral will be held on Thursday, Sept. 3 at 11 a.m. at St. Marguerite Catholic Church, 15 S. 7th St., Tooele, UT 84074.

Obit Jeanne Louise (Frederick) HaasJeanne Louise (Frederick) Haas went peacefully to be with her Heavenly Father on Aug. 14, 2015, at the age of 59 in Tooele, Utah, after battling cancer. Her husband Georg was at her side. Jeanne was born on Dec. 19, 1955, in Houston, Texas, to Paul and Barbara Frederick. Jeanne graduated from Katy High School in 1973. She completed training at the police academy and worked as a police officer, advancing to deputy sheriff. She served on the police force for a few years before retiring early. Jeanne married Georg Haas in April 1987. Jeanne taught all her children the joy of cooking, true love and enjoyment of family, to celebrate and make traditions, fish, hunt, work hard, be handy around the house, to garden, the joy in music and song, and — most importantly — about Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Her children remember her most as a kind and loving mother who encouraged them to follow their dreams and pursue their goals. Jeanne taught herself how to play hymnals on the piano and was blessed with a beautiful voice. Jeanne is survived by her parents; husband Georg Haas; children Jason Nigh (Tiffany), Dana Martin, Justin Nigh (Jessica) and Elizabeth Rinck (Casey); stepchildren Frank and Hilmar (Antjie); siblings Aline (Cliff) and Elizabeth (Ralph); nephews Max, Sean, Nick, Greg, Robbie and Brandon; grandchildren Tatijanna, Hannah, Jacob, Joshua, Tanner, Dakota, Jaylei, Jaycei, Charley, Elisa and expected baby Elayna. Jeanne is preceded in death by her brother David Frederick. The family would like to thank you all for your prayers and condolences as well as all family, friends, doctors, and nurses for their kind care and efforts during her illness. A graveside service was held at Memorial Oaks Cemetery in Houston, Texas, on Aug. 21, 2015.
