Obit Michael Kenneth Hess 1Michael (aka Mr. Wonderful, or as his closest friends knew him, The King) was born July 26, 1964 to Theron Parker Hess and Ruth Lavon Gallacher Hess. He died peacefully with his family by his side at Strawberry Reservoir on June 21, 2015. Obit Michael Kenneth Hess 2Michael was a graduate of Ben Lomond High School and later attended both the University of Utah and Stevens-Henager College. After graduating, Michael served his country as a Private First Class in the U.S. Army Amphibious Unit. Post-military, the majority of his career was spent in the grocery industry, including Associated Foods, Fleming Foods, Dick Simons and NPS. He was the true definition of a workhorse, rarely ever missing a day and always striving to provide for his family. Mike, as he’s known to his friends and family, was born and raised in Ogden, Utah. He moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, in his twenties where he married, then later divorced, Deborah Ann Corwell, having his only child, Michelle K. Hess. Mike remained in Salt Lake City until his final year of life. He ultimately moved to Tooele, Utah, to live and be closer with his daughter, his princess, as he always referred to her. Michelle recounts her dad as a great role model when it came to giving to others. Dad would give the shirt off his back to help a complete stranger. There wasn’t another soul like him and in his own words, “I’m one of a kind and there’s no one else like me.” Dad loved to makes others laugh and was always good to go for a great story, joke, and or would just break out in a funky dance move. One of his most famous lines was, “You wanna dance?”  As we would walk with him you could always expect him to challenge you to a race. My all-time favorite quote is “do you see this face? There’s only one face like this!” In Mike’s spare time, with a drink in hand, he loved to gamble, play golf and bowl. He was always checking the time to ensure he was perched in front of the TV to watch whatever sporting event was on: whether it be basketball, football, baseball or the fights. Mike was so proud of his grandchildren. He was always bragging to anyone that would listen to his stories of their major accomplishments. He tried to be at every event he could and was always the kids’ biggest cheering section, as he truly was their biggest fan. He was so proud of the man Braeden had become when joined the Army, and later becoming a Ranger. He loved watching Thad play football and rugby. The girls, Alexa and Allison, loved to give their grandpa a hard time as often as they could. He would dish it right back to them and then play the victim to Tom and myself. Grandpa loved his grandkids more than anything. Mike is survived by his only daughter, Michelle K. Torgensen and her fiancé Thomas Ryan Miller, ex son-in-law Chad Lane Torgensen, his grandchildren Braeden James Torgensen, Alexa Margurite Torgensen, Thad Michael Torgensen and Allison Lorrine Miller. Even as they were not blood-related, Mike had great respect for his daughter’s siblings and loved to brag about the accomplishments of Shane Kojima, Mindy Kojima and Shawn Kojima. He is also survived by his two brothers, Brent Hess and Randy Hess, with multiple nieces and nephews between the two. Mike was preceded in death by his mother, Ruth Lavon Gallacher, whom he loved and adored and her parents Kenneth David and Gladys King Gallacher; father Theron Parker Hess and his parents Edward and Ethel Hess; His favorite uncle Tommy, aunt Amy, nephew Christopher Lee Brown, Kay Corwell and nephew Ryan Corwell. You’ll forever be missed, but you’ll forever remain in our hearts and never forgotten. Keep on dancing daddy and look after my babies for me. I love you! In lieu of flowers, the family is taking donations for Dad’s headstone. Please send to 1303 E. 270 South, Tooele, Utah 84074.

Walden Orin Gurney

Obit Walden Orin Gurney 1On July 20, 2015, our Heavenly Father took our husband, our father, our grandfather, our brother, our teacher and our friend back into His presence to live with Him again. Wally left this mortal existence to be reunited with his parents, Waldon and Rose, his brothers, Bryant (Roberta) and Wayne (Marilyn), and his daughter Gaylynn (Ron). He is survived by his cherished wife and eternal companion Marilyn, his sons Lance and Kevin, his daughter Heather, his brother Brice (Linda) and sister Doreen. He is also survived by grandchildren Shae, Jeni, Mattie, Nathan, McKay, Hayden, Savanna, Cooper, Morgan, Nicole (Thayne), Brittany, Kaylee, Kyle and Parker, and a great granddaughter, Joslyn. Walden Orin Gurney was born Oct. 28, 1942, in Magrath, Alberta, Canada. He was the oldest of five children born to Waldon Orin and Rose Alvira Holladay Gurney. He spent his early life helping with farm work and with the huge garden his parents grew every year. He had fond memories of his grandparents and of all the fun he had fishing, swimming, and playing with his brothers and many friends. After completing school in Magrath, he attended Ricks College, where he met the love of his life. He was married and sealed to Marilyn Williams for time and all eternity on Aug. 21, 1963, in the Cardston, Alberta Temple. Wally completed a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education and biological science and a master’s degree in physical education at BYU. He later completed an education specialist (EDS) degree at the University of Utah. In his youth, Wally had teachers who inspired him and created his desire to do the same. He always knew he wanted to teach. He began his educational career at Dugway Proving Grounds in Tooele County, Utah, where he was the biology teacher and basketball coach. Marilyn and Wally arrived at Dugway so proud of their first baby son, Lance. During the next seven years, they added three more children, Gaylynn, Kevin, and Heather. Wally quickly realized it was hard to support a family on a teacher’s salary, so he went to school during summers to get qualified to be an administrator. After teaching seven years at Dugway, he served as principal of Wendover K-12, Dugway High School and Grantsville High School — all in Tooele County. He then served as superintendent of Tooele County schools. It was while in Grantsville that Wally served as the Grantsville 6th Ward bishop.

Obit Walden Orin Gurney 2In 1987 Wally, Marilyn, Kevin, and Heather moved to Blackfoot, Idaho, where Wally served as principal of Blackfoot High School, assistant superintendent, and principal of Mountain View Middle School. In 2003, after 37 years, Wally decided it was time to retire from education. He continued to look for opportunities to teach and influence young people to be all that they could be. Wally’s true calling in life was that of teacher. Whether it was school, church, or life, Wally was an incredible teacher. Wally had a knack for working with youth and he always had their interest at heart — whether it was educating them, thumping on them, counseling them, or watching them excel at their activities. He was always there for the youth of this world. Wally also loved the outdoors, especially fishing with his sons when he could. He always loved sports and was a star on his high school basketball team. He idolized his coach, Tommy Karren, who was a man of great integrity. Wally and Marilyn encouraged their children all through the years in any sport they chose. Wally supported his grandchildren in sports by attending games in all weather conditions, driving them to games, and helping them with extra practice. Wally and Marilyn wanted to live close to all their grandchildren, so when their daughter and husband, who were in Blackfoot, decided to move to the Tri-Cities in 2011, it was time for them to move to Kennewick, where three out of four families would be. They have loved having so much of their family nearby and being able to attend grandchildren’s activities. Wally will be greatly missed by his family and many friends and youth. We find peace in our knowledge that we will be together with him again. Viewing: Friday, July 24, 5-8 p.m., Hillcrest Memorial Center, 9353 W. Clearwater Ave., Kennewick, Washington; Funeral: Saturday, July 25 at 11 a.m. Viewing 1 hour prior, LDS Chapel, 8120 W. 4th Ave., Kennewick, Washington. Interment: Desert Lawn Memorial Park, 1401 S. Union St., Kennewick, Washington. For online condolences, please visit www.AskHillcrest.com.

Jack Lee Crellin

Obit Jack Lee CrellinOur loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and passionate patriot-statesman passed away on July 17, 2015, after a brief illness. Jackie Lee Crellin was born on Sept. 28, 1926 in Rawlins, Wyoming, to Erman and Hilda Crellin, and fittingly, the 12th great-grandson of a religious freedom seeking pilgrim aboard the Mayflower who signed the Mayflower Compact, laying the foundation for liberty and law. Jack was raised in Tooele, Utah, and enjoyed sports and caused some amount of trouble with his brother Ken. An early adolescent accident changed the direction of his life from a pursuit of athletics to a pursuit of knowledge. He literally “served” his way through his time as a Corporal in the U.S. Army as a typist and tennis player at the end of World War II. Jack graduated first in his class from Tooele High School. He then graduated from the University of Utah (’49) and earned his J.D. from the University of Utah School of Law in 1952, where he also served on the board of editors of the Utah Law Review. He spent his law school summers working as a Yellowstone Park Ranger, the beginning of a life-long passion for geysers and everything Yellowstone. On June 11, 1954, Jack married his sweetheart, Carolyn G. Barker, in Salt Lake City. They were later sealed in the Salt Lake City temple with their four children. Jack served as Asst. Attorney General of the State of Utah from 1968 to 1974. He was the Salt Lake City Attorney from 1958 to 1968, as well as Asst. City Attorney from 1955 to 1957. He began his career as a land-man for El Paso Natural Gas and Standard Oil of California. He was licensed to practice law in the U.S. District Court, U.S. Court of Appeals, 10th Circuit, and the U.S. Supreme Court. Jack served on the Salt Lake International Airport Advisory Board, lectured on constitutional law and the U.S. Constitution with W. Cleon Skousen’s Freeman Institute, and enjoyed a life of service in the LDS Church, especially serving many young men, along with his own sons, as a volunteer leader in the Boy Scouts of America. To those who knew him, Jack was one of the smartest, most principled, dependable and honest men you could have the pleasure to know. He was a true patriot, statesman, constitutional scholar, naturalist, photographer, and family history recorder extraordinaire! He loved his family and family vacations across the West, but always found his way to Yellowstone, where he captured some rare and amazing photographs of the majesty of Steamboat Geyser, along with many other geysers and natural wonders. Jack also loved simple pleasures: good food, limericks, wildflowers, classic movies, and good ol’ country music. Jack’s heart was, and will always be, in Yellowstone country amidst the grandeur of God’s creations, and among family and friends. It is here that he helped hand-craft a simple log cabin for his parents, where he enjoyed his retirement summers, and where he bid farewell to this world, returned to the embrace of departed loved ones, and into the rest of his loving Savior. Jack is survived by his beautiful bride of over sixty-one years, Carolyn Barker Crellin; his brothers Ken and Terry (Janice); four children Kelly (Sandee), Sierra Collins, Kim (Stephanie), and Casey (Lisa); twelve grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services were held Thursday, July 23, 2015 at 11 a.m. at Larkin Sunset Gardens, 1950 East Dimple Dell Road (10600 South), Sandy, UT. Friends and family were welcome to visit one hour prior to the services. Interment was in the Larkin Sunset Gardens Cemetery, following the services.

Obit Eugenio “Gene” BarbieroOur loving husband, father, papa, brother, uncle, and friend Eugenio Barbiero, known to most as Gene or Geno, peacefully passed away July 28, 2015. He was surrounded by his loving wife and children. Gene was born on Jan. 10, 1937, in Pedivigliano, Italy. He immigrated with his family to Utah when he was 12 years old. He attended South High School and was a proud member of its football team where he played defensive line, just like his boys. Gene helped lead South High to its last state championship in 1954. In 1959, Gene proudly joined the United States Army National Guard and served during the Berlin Crisis. He was honorably discharged in 1964. In the summer of 1968, Gene met the love of his life, Janet Crocco. They were married on Sept. 21, 1968. Together, they had four children and seven grandchildren, with one on the way. His grandchildren were the pride and joy of his life. Gene and Janet moved to Tooele in 1968 where Gene managed Sunset Sports Center and later owned and operated Gene’s Sports Center. Throughout his 40-plus years working in Tooele, Gene kept the youth of Tooele County stocked in shoes, Levi 501s, shotgun shells and fishing bait. He employed many Tooele High students who still hold fond memories of working for Geno. Gene had a big heart and would often help fund sporting equipment, clothing, or shoes for those in need. Gene’s big heart was one of his greatest qualities. Anyone that had the opportunity to visit Gene’s home knew that they were always welcomed there. You couldn’t leave without enjoying some pasta, homemade sausage, or delicious Italian treats. Gene loved being Italian and instilled that love to his children and grandchildren. He upheld many Italian traditions and passed them proudly onto his children. He often joked and said, “There are two kinds of people in the world; Italians — and those who want to be Italian!” Gene is survived by his loving wife of almost 47 years, Janet; children Ann Marie (Dave) Helm, Gina (Ron) Ruiz, Anthony (Julie) Barbiero and Joseph (Kristi) Barbiero; grandchildren Cameron and Alec Wolverton, Neko, Marcus, and Abigail Ruiz, Charles and Stella Barbiero and a granddaughter due in November; brother Louie (Pauline) Barbiero and brothers-in-law Frank (Joan) Crocco and Gene (Gaylene) Crocco. She was nurtured with the most tender loving care from her soul mate, that she was lucky enough to call her husband, until the time of her death. Lorna held many careers during her working years with the most recent at Tooele Army Depot. Her favorite and most joyful time working was at Bryce Canyon National Park throughout high school. Her most cherished memories were associated with the outdoors. She ventured many road trips with her husband and family as she always had an adventurous spirit. Lorna was always the No. 1 fan and supporter of all her kids and grandchildren; whether it was local sporting events, traveling out of state for motocross or even out of the country for dance, she was there with a cheering smile and a heart full of kindness. Obit Stephen Paul Michaud 1On July 28, 2015, our amazing husband, father, grandpa and friend passed away early at his home. Known to many as “Yoda” or “Steve-O,” he was an amazing man and loyal friend to all. Obit Stephen Paul Michaud 2Those who knew Steve truly loved him and undoubtedly felt his love in return. His passing will leave an enormous void in the hearts of so many. His love and friendship spread further than anyone could imagine and we will forever be healing from his loss. Steve was born March 6, 1959, in Rumford, Maine, to Clarita Mary Angeles and Joseph Paul Michaud. He loved to go camping, fishing, and especially play softball. He never missed a game and was always the No. 1 cheerleader for the team with his signature holler, “Hey, hey, what do ya say, take that ball the other way!” Steve always knew how to make everyone laugh, even if they didn’t want to. If he wasn’t welcoming you with a kiss or ‘mooning’ you to get a laugh, he was probably telling you a joke. Steve had the most contagious ‘belly laugh’ you ever heard. You could laugh back and forth with him all day just from his chuckle. If he couldn’t get you to smile any other way, he had no problem turning the jokes on himself, completely at his own expense, and often ended them with, “Ba ding, ding, doh!” Steve is survived by his parents; loving ex-wife Jackie Michaud; daughter Heather (Rocky) Mannos; grandsons Braze Mannos and Kason Michaud; Kason’s mom Kenzie Butler; as well as many close friends and family who loved him dearly. Steve was preceded in death by his son Colton. A life celebration will be held in Steve’s honor Saturday, Aug. 8, 2015, from 4-8 p.m. at the home of Lonny Ahlstrom and Cris Hunt, 8044 N. Mountain View Rd., Lake Point, Utah. Online condolences and memories may be shared at www.daltonhoopes.com.
