Alexander J. Torres, 93, passed away on Sept. 3, 2016, at McKay Dee Hospital from a pre-existing heart condition. Alex was born to Camilo and Amalia (Molina) Torres in Dolores, Colorado. He and his 23 brothers and sisters helped his parents operate a 369 acre farm near Dolores, Colorado, where they raised many crops and animals. Alex was proud to serve his country. He joined the U.S. Army in July 1944. He served in India, Burma and China with the 475th Infantry Regiment and the 124th Calvary Regiment for 16 months. He was honorably discharged in May 1946. He married Susan (Rael) in 1950. They moved from Colorado to Tooele, Utah in 1952, where he was employed at the Tooele Army Depot until his retirement in 1983. He was an active member of St. Marguerite Catholic Church in Tooele, serving on the Parish Council and Men’s Club. He moved with his wife to Ogden in 1999 and was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. His greatest joy was his family and he liked nothing better than spending time with his family. He could repair anything and got great pleasure from helping out his family and neighbors. He often could be seen mowing the lawn or shoveling snow at his home as well as for several of his neighbors. Just days before he was admitted to the hospital, he mowed his lawn and picked several bushels of peaches from the peach tree in his back yard, which he shared with family, friends and neighbors. He is survived by his wife, Susan; one daughter, Mary Torres (David, deceased) Berry; five sons: Michael (Georgia) Torres, Ben Torres, Matthew (JoAnn) Torres, Patrick (Dana) Torres and Phil Torres; seven grandchildren: Justin (Holly) Torres, Niki (Santiago) Medina, Alexandra Berry, Stevie Jo Torres, Carlie Ann Torres, Anthony Torres and Thomas Torres; and five great-grandchildren: Xcenyia Medina, Memphis Medina, Santiago Medina Jr., Gabriella Castagno and Isabella Castagno. He is also survived by two brothers, Fred (Louise) Torres of Colorado and Richard (Marilyn) Torres of California; one sister, Susann (Hector, deceased) of Renova, New Mexico, and many nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank Drs. Emily Cook, Victor Varela, Dennis Sobotka, and Terri Hoffman and the medical staff at McKay Dee Hospital for their loving care of our father and grandfather. Funeral services will be held on Friday, Sept. 9, 2016, at St. Marguerite Catholic Church, 15 S. 7th Street, Tooele, Utah. A viewing will commence at 10 a.m., followed by a rosary at 10:45 a.m. and Mass at 11 a.m. officiated by the Rev. Kenneth Vialpando. Following the funeral, burial will be in the Ogden City Cemetery at 1875 Monroe Blvd. at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you perform a kind act for a family member, a neighbor, or a stranger, in honor of our father and grandfather.
