Obit Floyd Leroy SampsonFloyd Leroy Sampson was born in Delta, Utah, on Jan. 12, 1944. Leroy was the oldest of Floyd and Edna Sampson’s three children. He has a sister, Jackie, and a baby brother, Kenny. He grew up in Las Vegas, Nevada, back when the booming metropolis consisted of four high schools. He loved baseball and played often. After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he helped to patrol areas near Germany’s Berlin Wall.

Leroy married Elizabeth Ellen Smith in Chula Vista, California, on March 7, 1970, and was sealed to her in the St. George Utah Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1972.

He worked at a mine in Eagle Mountain, California, as they began raising their family. Shortly after their fourth child was born, they moved to Mesa, Arizona, where Leroy ran his own company repairing shopping carts. In 1989 they moved their family to Portland, Oregon, where Ellen and Leroy stayed until 2007. They then moved to Stockton, Utah, where they lived until the passing of his sweet Ellen in 2015. Leroy returned to Las Vegas, where he married a dear friend he had known nearly all of his life, Alicia Foutz, in 2016, in the Las Vegas Nevada Temple. Alicia provided much-needed companionship and support for the final years of his life.

Leroy is known by all as a very fun-loving man with a contagious laugh. He loved the youth and always asked the bishop to let him teach the hardest Sunday School class. He studied the scriptures often. He loved God and wanted his posterity to know and follow Him. He combined his love of the gospel of Jesus Christ along with his ability to connect well with others by serving a three-year mission with Ellen as a Salt Lake City Conference Center tour guide.

Leroy could sing a country song from start to finish knowing only about four of the actual words. He loved California oranges, Utah peaches, and Oregon berries. He had a friend on every corner. He did not know a stranger, and everyone loved his stories. He always said, “I never let the truth get in the way of a good story.” He lived to help others. He was a champion of the underdog and could talk with anyone about anything.

He taught his children to love God, honor their mother, reverence their freedom, and value an education. He spoiled and loved his grandchildren. Ellen often said, “As soon as the grandkids hit about age two, all they want is their grandpa.”

Leroy returned to his heavenly home April 10, 2020, while living in Las Vegas, Nevada. He was preceded in death by his parents and first wife, Elizabeth Ellen. He is survived by his second wife, Alicia Foutz; children David (Tiffany) Sampson, Kevin (Jennifer) Sampson, Kristi (Carl) Rosengreen, and Katie (Marc) Steed; and grandchildren Raelynn (Austin), Sydney, Austin, Jaemynn, Kylie, Hailey (Ramon), Melia, Braden, Lucy, David, and Vivian.

Leroy will be laid to rest at the Stockton, Utah, Cemetery on April 18, 2020. Due to safety concerns related to the Coronavirus outbreak, the services are being held privately by the family on April 18 at 11 a.m., but to participate via livestream, please visit LeRoy’s obituary page on www.NelsonMortuary.com.

Obit Noreen M. (Peg) Wilson1924 – 2019

Our loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt, passed away Dec. 25, 2019. Peg was born in Huron, South Dakota, on Nov. 23, 1924, to the late William and Nora Walsh. She had eight siblings.

On May 3, 1952, she married William E. (Bill) Wilson and they had five children: Maureen (Lee) Slusher, Mary (Hank) Pannunzio, Mike (Marla) Wilson, Michele (Paul) McNichol, and Marna (Dave) Sturgeon. Peg had 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Peg was very involved in her church, St. Marguerite of Tooele, playing the organ in the original church, and she played the piano for all of us at home. She was very active in the Catholic Ladies Guild and was selected Catholic Woman of the Year for St. Marguerite in 1998.

Peg graduated from nursing school in Mitchell, South Dakota, and worked as a surgical nurse in Tacoma, Washington. She worked as an R.N. at Oquirrh Hills, Tooele Nursing Home, the Tooele Clinic, and for the Tooele County Health Department, and during that time continued her education at the University of Utah.

Our mother loved her family unconditionally and her kindness and caring was felt by all. Her sewing, crafting, gardening, baking and cooking skills will always be remembered. She took great joy in cooking and baking with her grandchildren.

She was always up for an outing or adventure… parasailing, rafting, snorkeling in the Bahamas, fishing trips to Lake Powell, Junction and Fish Lake, beach trips to Oregon and Cape Cod, and other trips over the years while spending time with her family.

She was the heart of our family, a loving shoulder to lean on. She was the light of our lives and we were hers.

We love and miss you Mom, and are so blessed to have had you for so long.

Our mother so deserved a gathering of family and friends to celebrate her life, but would be the first to understand the situation in our world today, and would only want for everyone’s safety.

Obit Glenn A Sherwood1928 – 2020

“Always a Gentleman”

Glenn (Skip) Austin Sherwood passed away April 15, 2020, as a result of on-going health issues. He was 91 years young. Skip was born Sept. 30, 1928, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to Alteron and Olive Sherwood. He was the 10th child of thirteen children. Skip had many attributes, but perhaps the one that stands out the most was he was known as “always a gentleman.” He was a friend to all, including strangers. He always had a smile on his face and would help anyone. He loved people and would go on many walks; always stopping and talking to those he encountered.

In order to help this large family, at the early age of 19, he joined the United States Army on May 25, 1948. He graduated from the Army’s cook and bakery school at Fort Knox, Kentucky. He later transferred to Deseret Chemical Depot in Tooele County. As a result of this transfer, he met the love of his life Marjorie Nash and they were married April 8, 1950. Shortly thereafter, he was honorably discharged from the Army at Camp Carson, Colorado, on May 24, 1950. He obtained employment at the Tooele Army Depot and they made their home in Tooele, Utah. They were blessed with two children, Diane Elaine and Rick Glenn Sherwood. On May 13, 1954, they were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple for time and all eternity.

Skip traveled to many places domestic and internationally, and after more than 40 years of service in the technical writing area, he retired from Tooele Army Depot.

Most of Skips’ adult life was spent in the service of his church, for the Boy Scouts of America and other civic activities. He was called to serve as a counselor in two different bishoprics for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was called to serve on two different Church Stake Missions and served in many other Church callings throughout his life. His work and service in the Boy Scouts was extensive, and on Feb. 26, 1987, he was recognized by being awarded with the Silver Beaver award at a ceremony at Symphony Hall in Salt Lake City, Utah. This is the highest award that can be given to a civilian serving the Boy Scouts.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, daughter and son, as well as 11 siblings. He is survived by his only remaining sibling Mary Kennedy, residing in Texas; four grandchildren: Russell (Julene) DeMond, Ryan (Akiko) DeMond, Lisa DeMond, and Jennifer (Joseph) Sherwood Beckenhauer; as well as many great-grandchildren nieces and nephews. His smiling face, kindness to all, fierce independence, neighborhood relations, love of his Savior Jesus Christ, love of Church, and finally his gentlemanly ways, will be missed by all.

Due to the COVlD-19 situation, no church services will be held. A limited viewing will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, April 22, 2020, at Tate Mortuary, 110 S. Main St., Tooele, Utah. A graveside service will be held following the viewing, at the Tooele City Cemetery at 11 a.m.

Obit Costadina (Dina) BuzianisMay 4, 1934 – April 21, 2020

Our loving mother and grandmother Costadina (Dina) Buzianis passed away after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was born in VourVoura, Kinouris, Greece, on May 4, 1934, to Panayoti (Peter) and Angeliki (Angela) Bolovis. She was the second of seven children growing up during World War II. When she was 18 years old, she and her brother Hadi and sister Eleni went to Montreal, Canada, in search of a better life for their family. They did not speak any English but managed to find jobs to make enough money to send for the rest of the family. She worked as a nanny and in a hospital in Montreal.

In 1958 she came to Utah by train, to visit her uncle and aunt who owned the Hometown Bakery. While she was visiting it was “arranged” that she would stay and marry Louis T. Buzianis. They were married Oct. 11, 1959, in the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Salt Lake City. They made their home in Tooele, where they raised three children and worked on the family farm in Middle Canyon.

Mom was truly kind, loving and was a fantastic cook. One of her greatest joys was to cook for her family and friends. She loved gardening and working in her yard. She always shared the fruits of her labor with family, friends and neighbors. Mom taught us to be hardworking and giving. She loved children and as a result, babysat for family and friends throughout her life. She was so proud of her two granddaughters and would be overjoyed to know she is a great-grandma. After high school, Jay proudly served in the Air Force for four years.

He married Carol LaRee Jasperson on Feb. 16, 1963. Together they raised their two children, Stephen Martin (Marty) and Wendy. Many Friday night sing-a-longs with Jay and his guitar and fun fishing, hunting and scouting trips were had over the years.

Jay worked at Dugway Proving Ground in the instrumentation division until his retirement in 1993. He also served as the president of the National Association of Government Employees at Dugway and enjoyed representing his coworkers.

After retirement, Jay and Carol enjoyed several fishing trips as well as vacations to visit family across the country. Dad also became active in the local chapter of the Sons of the Utah Pioneers, and helped with many historical projects around Tooele County, including researching the information for the statues at the Tooele Public Library. In his later years, Dad enjoyed playing with his friends in their “band” for the folks in area care facilities. He loved making people smile with his music.

Jay was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He held many positions and loved his 14th Ward family.

After Carol died in 2018, Dad moved to the Beehive Home in Tooele. He tried his hardest to be happy despite his dementia, but longed to be with Mom. We truly think he died of a broken heart and are so happy he has finally found his love.

Jay was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings Marion, Betty, Margaret, Shirley and Jim. He is survived by his children Marty (Cheryl) and Wendy; grandchildren Stephen Flanders, Camille Coons, Naomi Leighton, Patrick McAtee and Parker McAtee; and five great-grandchildren; as well as a large extended family who all loved him dearly.

Special thanks to the many people who cared for our dad, including the staff and residents of the Beehive Home of Tooele, Dr. Sergio Abarca and Tori, and everyone who took the time to visit and take him on rides. He loved you all.

A viewing will be held Friday, May 1, 2020, from 11 a.m. to noon, at Tate Mortuary, followed by a graveside service at Tooele City Cemetery.
