Obit Robert Gerald GillespieOur beloved father, grandfather, cousin and friend, Robert Gerald Gillespie, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2018, at his home. Bob was born Dec. 3, 1953, in Tooele, Utah, to Gerald C. and Eleanor Long Gillespie. Bob was raised in Tooele alongside his brother Frank. The two of them got into their fair share of mischief during their younger years. Many stories have been told many times that recap their adventures.

After graduating from Tooele High in 1972, Bob went to work at MagCorp where he worked for many years. During his time at MagCorp, Bob developed many lifelong friendships that meant the world to him. Bob married Tessie Hammond on May 29, 1981. The two later divorced.

Take a Pendleton shirt, some Wrangler jeans, and throw in a little Hank Williams Jr. and you have our Dad. Our Dad was a very routine kind of guy. He thrived on the fact that his routine allowed him to focus on his pride and joy being “Grandpa Bob.”

For over the last 12 years, Dad worked full time for North Park Transportation. During his time at North Park, in usual Bob fashion, he developed many friendships with the drivers he took care of through the years.

Dad was a very simple guy who lived a very simple life. He would jump at any chance he was given to brag about how proud he was of his kids and his grandkids. He is going to be forever missed.

Survived by his children: Melodi Brown, Sandy, UT; Jenifer (Louis) Jacobsen, West Jordan, UT; Weston Gillespie and Nicole Gillespie, Sandy, UT; Kortnee (Julio) Heise, Riverton, UT; McKenzie (Toni) Larson, West Jordan, UT; Ex-wife Jenny (Jeff) Middleton, Sandy UT; longtime friend Debbie Ginnett, Tooele, UT; as well as many cousins and friends.

Preceded in death by both his parents, his brother Frank D. Gillespie and longtime friend Nicole Ginnett.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Aug. 18, 2018, at 11 a.m. at Tate Mortuary, 110 S. Main St., Tooele. There will be a viewing prior to the services at 10 a.m. Dad will be laid to rest in the Tooele City Cemetery.

If you are able to join us in honoring Dad, please feel free to stick to a casual dress code, as that’s the way Dad would’ve wanted it.

Obit Kayla Marie CurtisKayla Marie Curtis left to live with her heavenly family on Sunday, Aug. 12, 2018, from complications of an acute illness. She was born to Richard Warren Curtis and Trudy Maxfield Curtis on Sept. 15, 1986.

She leaves behind her three children: Coby Jacob, Lexy Ann, and Kadelyn Marie Rackley, all of Tooele, Utah. Also remaining are her parents of Tooele; siblings, Richard Warren Curtis, Jr., (Dawn) of Tooele; Jason Lane Curtis (Brianna) of American Fork, Utah; Misty Dawn Young (Brad) of Tooele; and loving fiancee Tavis Chad Huber. Many nieces and nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles and friends mourn her passing, especially her cousin April Taylor and niece Mindee Costello. Many of these considered her their second mom.

Preceded in death by grandparent Maxfield, grandparent Curtis, Joshua Nathanial Curtis (Nephew), aunts DeAnna Maxfield and Uvonne Maxfield McCarty, and Uncle Byron Grant Maxfield.

Kayla was known for her kind heart and spunkiness. Definitely a mother bear. She took pride in a strong work ethic. Had self-esteem, confidence and pride in self — always with her make up on and hair done; cooking healthy, tasty meals. Loved pretty surroundings.

Kayla loved her animals of various species. You’d think their home was a zoo. Known for her craftiness and interior decoration. She lived up to her Patriarchal Blessing in these areas. She had a soft spot for those less fortunate by providing food, warm clothes, and friendship — always instilling these traits in her children. She supported BACA in philosophy. Strong pride in country and military, sponsoring Easter sacks of goodies with her day care kiddos for her brother’s military company in Iraq. She received a USA flag that flew over that country on the day of the “treats” arrival. She has a competitive spirit for table games with her family plus playing candy rush on her phone.

Tavis and Kayla enjoyed impromptu trips, which gave Kayla an opportunity to see other parts of our state and country. They were busy making their house into a home. They had planned to marry in Bora Bora, which she was thrilled to plan.

Rest in peace baby daughter — Fly High!

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Aug. 18, 2018, at the Tooele North LDS Stake Center, 580 N. 270 East, Tooele, at 11 a.m. Burial in the Tooele City Cemetery following the services with her desire for her children, family and friends to visit often.

Anita D. Kammerdiener (Cardenas)

Obit Anita D. KammerdienerAug. 17, 1955 – Aug. 20, 2018

This is the story of Anita Kammerdiener. Anita was a wonderful woman who was loved, is missed, and will always be cherished. Our “Nana,” as she liked to be called by her grandchildren, was an amazing wife, Mom, daughter, sister, friend, and lover of life like no other could be.

Anita’s story starts on Aug. 17, 1955, when she was born to Floverto and Adelina Cardenas at Holy Cross Hospital in Salt Lake City. She grew up in the beautiful mountains of Ophir, Utah, with her amazing brothers and sisters. When a bit older, the family moved to Tooele, and it was there that she grew into the vivacious and fiesty woman who we would all come to know and love. She had two sons who absolutely adored and thought the world of her. She was well known in the community for her volunteer work at St. Marguerite Catholic Church, and for being a neighborhood “Mom” to anyone who needed her to be. Her smile was contagious, and her spirit was bubbly and full of life.

The things that Anita loved were always tied to working and playing hard. She was a fan of puzzles, art and all things music. If she were at a concert, you could count on her being the first to rock out. She instilled that deep love of music into her sons and grandsons. She worked for 14 years as an accountant at JC Penney in Salt Lake City. She was loved by her coworkers, and did a tremendous amount of volunteer work for United Way, Susan G Komen Race For The Cure, and many other causes that were close to her heart. She loved to be outdoors, and especially loved long walks and visiting the beautiful beaches of San Diego where her brothers and sisters migrated when they were younger. Her family meant the world to her, and she relished getting their phone calls or visiting them whenever she could.

Anita married Ted Kammerdiener in 1989. They were inseparable, and they stayed together until his passing in 2007. They loved all things classic car, and could be found at any one of many car shows in their area. Their ‘64 Riviera was their time machine, and they spent many hours keeping it primed, polished and ready to go.

Anita’s grandchildren were her heart and joy. There’s no denying that her “Bug” and “Antonio” as she called them, were the people she loved the most. Her son, Stan, was known as “Puto,” and Jeremy was lucky enough to avoid getting a nickname. Time spent at Nana’s house was very special for her boys, and there was nothing in this world she loved more than having them close to her.

Loved ones who cleared the path for Anita include her father, Flaverto Cardenas; mother, Adelina Cardenas; and her beloved husband, Ted Kammerdiener. Loved ones who will miss Anita until they meet again are her sons, Jeremy Cardenas and Stanley Cardenas; grandsons, Anthony Ventura and Ian Cardenas; sisters, Margueritte B. Collins (Jim), Delores Collins (Danny) and Kathy Boske; brothers, Sam Lopez, Lou Cardenas and Tom Cardenas; nieces and nephews, Stefanie Lopez, Cecily Boske, Jennifer Boske, Joshua Collins (Naomi), Brian Collins, Robert Cardenas (Lisa), Kelly Cardenas (Brooklyn) and all of the neighborhood children she looked after and cared for over the years.

Funeral services will include a viewing to be held on Friday, Aug. 24 at 10 a.m. Interment will follow. Both services will be held at Utah Veterans Cemetery and Memorial Park, 17111 1700 West, Bluffdale, Utah, at Camp Williams. A celebration of her life will follow on Saturday, and details will be posted on her Facebook page.

In lieu of flowers, we ask that any well-wishers donate to United Way in her name. Her work there was very important to her, and we wish to honor that.

“La Familia Es Todo.”

Obit LaRue Hale Soelberg BrownLaRue Hale Soelberg Brown passed away on Monday, Aug. 20, 2018, surrounded by many family members who had the opportunity to say goodbye during her final days.

Mom was born Nov. 16, 1930, to Frank Judd Hale and Mary Perthenia Imlay. She was the youngest of five children. She grew up in Grantsville, Utah, and married LeRoy Soelberg, Jr., her high school sweetheart, on June 10, 1949 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.

They are the parents of eight children: Jean (Paul) Didericksen, Carol (David) Jefferies, Scott (Shelly) Soelberg, Jay (Julee) Soelberg, Laurie (David) Green, Kaye (Jim) Stice, Lisa (Mark) Droubay and Mark (Allie) Soelberg.

Mom and Dad were the owners of the Jr. Mart and later built Soelberg’s Thriftway, where they happily served the community of Grantsville for many years. Dad passed away June 25, 1987. Later, Mom married Vern Brown and they served two full-time missions for the LDS Church in New York and New Zealand. Mom worked faithfully in every organization of the church. Serving as Stake Relief Society President of the Grantsville West Stake was one of her choicest experiences. She had a close friendship with those who served on her board and much was accomplished during her leadership. She was well known for giving inspiring lessons and motivating talks.

Mom was creative in all aspects of her life. She was a skilled baker, and she made many delicious meals for our family, which she generously shared with friends and neighbors. Mom was a talented seamstress, and she created beautiful costumes, prom dresses, and attire for special occasions.

Music was prevalent in our home and even though our mother never had a piano lesson, she composed and wrote lyrics to several songs and she could play them beautifully. She loved watching her children and grandchildren perform at countless programs and recitals.

One of Mom’s greatest gifts was writing. She penned many artistic pieces about her life experiences. Her writing achievements included an article that was published several times in various books and newspapers, about a Christmas morning when the family grocery business caught fire. Mom paid tribute to the many people in our community who came to help our family clean up the damage and get the store ready for business the next day.

She was blessed with many talents and she used them to help and encourage others. She was always thinking of ways to make people happy. Mom had the ability to lift others in such a way that would change their lives forever. She lived a remarkable life.

At the time of her death she had 34 grandchildren, 73 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. She dearly loved her posterity and left a legacy of wonderful memories through her close association with them. We will be forever grateful for our angel mother and for her strong testimony of the gospel, which will continue to motivate, guide and inspire us. It is our desire to honor her life by serving others and by strengthening our families as we follow her example.

A viewing will be held Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2018, from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the chapel on 428 S. Hale St., in Grantsville, Utah. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. Interment will be in the Grantsville City Cemetery immediately following the services.

Our family would like to extend a special thank you to the Brown Family for their love and support. We would like to thank Jay R. with Didericksen Memorial for his sensitivity and kindness. We appreciate those at Highland Glen and Brighton Hospice for the expert care that was given to our mother during the last weeks of her life.

Death Nona May GarciaNona May Garcia, loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, passed away on Monday, Aug. 27, 2018.

She was born May 4, 1926, to Richard Clark and Vivian Talbot Clark. She married J Don Garcia on March 5, 1950, and they were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on June 17, 1954. They had six children: Gary, Gloria, Robbin, Gus, David and Kriss; 18 grandchildren and 43 great-grandchildren.

She was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was the greatest asset of their family business: Garcia Construction. J Don and Nona made sure that if you needed a job, one was available. She was the foreman, clean-up crew, delivery driver and chef. Basically, she did anything and everything that needed to be done. Nona worked tirelessly in all that she set her mind to, but her greatest work was protecting her family.

Nona’s life was centered around her family; they were everything to her. It didn’t matter what your circumstances were, you always had a special place in her heart. She was selfless and giving. If you were in need, she would figure out a way to help. She was nurturing and loved spending time with her family. Creating long lasting memories gave her the most joy. A favorite memory will always be walking into the house and being filled with anticipation from the smell of homemade bread and her yodeling.

Anyone who knew Nona knew what laughter was, how to work hard, what it meant to give, that love truly matters, and being a part of a family was most important.

We all treasure the memories we have and long to share them with her again.

Obit Janet Curry RomoJanet Curry Romo passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2018, in Stansbury Park, UT.

She was born in Alameda, California, on May 19, 1965, to Elaine Angus Curry and James Earl Curry, where she spent her younger years. After moving with her family to Rock Springs, Wyo., she graduated from Rock Springs High School with honors in 1983.

Learning was fundamental to Janet. She earned her BA in Anthropology from Utah State University in 1997 before beginning her 20-year career with the state of Utah where she was, most recently, an Administrative Law Judge. Though this work was satisfying, it did not define her life.

Family and her faith were most important to Janet, and she relished both with passion. Janet served a mission in the Tegucigalpa, Honduras/Belize area for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where she learned Spanish and gained a love for her faith.

Janet married Mitch Romo in Las Vegas, Nev., on Jan. 25, 2003, and their marriage was later sealed in the Draper Temple on July 12, 2014.

Janet leaves behind her husband, Mitch; her stepson, Jeremy (Ashley) Romo; stepdaughter, Michelle Romo; mother, Elaine Curry; siblings, Kristine Curry, Jeffrey (Miguel) Curry, Scott (Peter) Curry, Kaylene (James) Young, Karalyn (Robert) Woodbury, and several nieces, nephews, and friends who love her and will miss her terribly.

She was preceded in death by her father, James Curry.

Obit Michael HuffmanOn Wednesday Aug. 29, 2018, our hearts were forever broken when we lost our husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, and dear friend, Michael Huffman.

Mike was born on Feb. 13, 1959, in Tooele, Utah, to Richard and Mayme Huffman. He grew up in Tooele with his five brothers and one sister. Mike graduated from Tooele High School in 1977, then joined the U.S. Air Force where he met his wife Janet at Fairchild A.F.B. in Spokane, WA. They married on June 30, 1979, in Newport, Washington. and two years later welcomed their first born, a son, Matthew.

Life then took the three of them to Izmir, Turkey, for two years before a one-year assignment at Patrick A.F.B. Florida where their second child, Nicole, was born. The family’s final destination was Tooele, Utah, when Mike was discharged from the Air Force in 1985. It was there that he joined the Utah Air National Guard’s 130th EIS where he served the remainder of his military career — a total of 33 years — retiring as a Chief Master Sergeant in 2010. At the same time he started a career with the Tooele County School District as the Information Technology Director, retiring in 2009 after 24 years of service.

Mike enjoyed spending time with his wife, son, daughter, and his grandchildren, Dillon (10), Ashton (9), and Jaxton (7). Special memories were made while camping, enjoying backyard BBQ’s, and holidays, with Thanksgiving and Christmas being his favorites.

Mike and Janet especially enjoyed traveling the world with destinations such as Germany, Holland, Greece, Italy, the Caribbean, Hawaii, Alaska, the Oregon Coast, and New England. His heart’s desire was to go back to Hawaii once more where he could have an ice-cold beer on the beach.

Mike had a quiet strength that was well balanced with his sarcasm and humor. He was an extremely patient person with a genuine smile and a sincere and gentle nature. He was dedicated to see things through to the end and he lived his life with honor and integrity. His love for his grandsons knew no bounds and they will miss him dearly.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents and his older brother, Terry.

Our family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Darin Smith, Dr. Nitin Chandramouli and staff of UCS, and LDS Bone Marrow Clinic and ICU. We would also like to thank Tate Mortuary for their guidance and kindness. It was very much appreciated.

Family and Friends will gather at Meeting House, 132 N. 570 East, Tooele at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, 2018, for memorial services. Interment will follow at Tooele City Cemetery at 11:30 a.m. We would dearly love to have you join us to visit and share stories of Mike at a luncheon back at the Meeting House after the conclusion of the funeral.

“Rest peacefully now, my love. May your heart and soul forever fly with the angels.”

 – Love, J.

Obit Stella N. FranchesStella N. Franches died peacefully in the company of family on Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2018. Born June 18, 1927, her name means “star” and she carried the duty of that light throughout her life. An independent woman with a successful career, she was also a family leader.

Stella worked for First Security Bank in Tooele and then Salt Lake City for 42 years. Stella’s work ethic and belief in an American dream opened the door on that opportunity for her Greek immigrant family.

During the 1960s, she greatly enjoyed working part-time at Adrien ‘n Emilie boutique in Salt Lake City, where she developed her unique fashion sense.

She lived comfortably, even elegantly, in Salt Lake City’s Marmalade Hills neighborhood.

She is predeceased by her parents, Nicholas and Giannoula Franches; and her seven sisters, Bessie Kulias, Tula Kosta, Helen Douvris, Mary Cotsifas, Virginia Franches, Sophia Allcott and Tessie Cox. She was the last surviving Tooele Franches sister.

Known affectionately as Aunt Stella, she leaves behind three generations of nieces and nephews. We remember her for her smile and for the sound of her laughter. We want to especially thank her niece, Geneve Cromar, for her dedication to Aunt Stella during the last few years of her life.

Thanks to the staff of The Wellington assisted living center and Comfort Worx hospice services for their extraordinary care.

A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15  at Tooele City Cemetery.
