Obit Gilbert MondragonOur loving husband, father, grandpa, and son Gilbert Mondragon passed away Dec. 13, 2014, in San Tan Valley, Arizona. He was born and raised in Tooele, Utah to Levi and Cande Mondragon on Oct. 19, 1946. Gilbert loved being outdoors, especially when he was deer hunting and fishing in Settlement and Middle canyons. He married the love of his life, Effie. Together, they had five children and were married just short of 50 years. Gilbert always seemed to know if someone was having a bad day and would always try to make you smile. When he entered a room he would light up and yell “Hi ya, Hi ya, Hi ya!” He loved to joke around and scare you when you least expected it and you would be mad at first, but then you both would end up laughing, cursing you were going to get him back one day. He loved all kinds of animals, especially dogs. His last best friend, “Dirtball,” was right by his side ’til the end. He was awarded the Purple Heart during the Vietnam War, where he served as a Company Armorer in the United States Army. He was preceded in death by his parents; his loving son, Khristain; brothers-in-law Bill Boulard, Ronnie and Ross Atencio; nephew, Jason Crossley; and his beloved dog, “Jazz.” Survived by his devoted wife, Effie; his children, Melani (Ed) Stone, Pete, Mandee (Scott) McClanahan, Matthew (Jo) Mondragon; his sisters, Gloria, Jenny, Edna, and Angie; 13 grandchildren, Lainy, Tesla, Eddie, Brayden, Zackary, Zaviaar, Ivy, Tori, Ozzy, Chloe, Harper, Greyson, and Danika; lifelong friends; and many nieces and nephews who he loved very much. The family is planning a private celebration of his life. A graveside service will be held with full military honors in Phoenix, Ariz., on Dec. 22, 2014 at noon. His presence in our family and all those who knew him will be missed more than we can begin to say. We loved you so much, Dadarella, and will miss you terribly. Rest in peace, Dad, and give Khristain a big hug and a kiss for us! In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Gilbert Mondragon Memorial Fund at any Wells Fargo Bank.

Obit Edith Myrle Christopherson Penovich 1On Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, 2014, heaven became a little more kind, a little more gentle, as our mother, Edith Myrle Christopherson Penovich, passed on suddenly to her new home and even greater existence. She was 95 years old, born April 18, 1919, to Andrew Washington Christopherson and Janet Amelia Lloyd Wallis in Midvale, Utah. She was married to Frank Penovich Jr. on Sept. 12, 1941, and later sealed to him for time and all eternity on Sept. 12, 1990. Frank died on May 28, 2003. Edith was always loved for her many selfless acts of service to her family and friends and her many kindnesses and compassion for others. She was a quiet, sweet and gentle person and was admired for her devotion to duty and her unconditional love for people and for never having an unkind word toward her fellow man. She was a true peacemaker and an eternal optimist. She was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served as secretary for several Relief Society presidencies, in the Primary and as a visiting teacher. She always devoted her services quietly under the radar, arranging for flowers and gifts for funerals, weddings and numerous church functions. Edith enjoyed her relationship with the Daughters of Utah Pioneers. Known as their Sunshine Girl, she sent birthday cards and flowers. She also served as a lunchroom lady and her gentle ways and kindnesses were remembered, treasured and acknowledged by staff and students alike for years to come. Mom was known for her keen intellect. She could spell anything (she even won a spelling bee contest and went to state in junior high). She was our living Rolodex, remembering birthdays, phone numbers and who was related to who and the stories behind their relationships. Obit Edith Myrle Christopherson Penovich 2She was blessed to retain that ability until the moment of her passing. She is survived by her two children, Frank LaMar (Millicent) Penovich Sr. and Edith LuAnn (Sid) Allen; eight grandchildren, F. LaMar (Wanda) Penovich; C. Dean (Melanie) Penovich, Malaena (Chris) Toohey; Marla (Austin) Wood; Eric (Katie) Allen; Courtney (Jason) Snarr; Kimberly (Joe) Earl and Meredith (Daniel) Woodall, and 30 great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents, one sister and four brothers: Norma (Mark) Haws; Harold (Iris) Christopherson; Melvin (Pat) Christopherson and Leslie Christopherson; a grandson, Jason Paul Allen and a great-granddaughter, Ellie Victoria Earl, died in infancy. Our love and gratitude go to Dr. Ronald Trudel and staff and especially for the unconditional love and devotion provided by the staff at the Tooele Rocky Mountain Care Center. Mom would say, “Serve and love one another.” On second thought, she would “live it,” with a smile, a squint and a twinkle in her eye. She had lovely soft gentle light blue eyes.

Dorothy Jean Lougy Carter

Obit Dorothy Jean Lougy CarterDorothy Jean Lougy Carter was born in Tooele, Utah, to James and Della Lougy Fawson on Nov. 22, 1927. She was her parents’ second child and only daughter. Dorothy took her last breath on Dec. 31, 2014 at the Lakeview Hospital in Bountiful, Utah, with her daughter near her side. Her little heart had at last just given out. Although the after effects of a broken back had left Dorothy in severe pain during the last years of her life, she never complained. Dorothy loved growing up in Tooele, where she made friends easily. She soon discovered that even though she was a very petite girl, she had no trouble keeping up with her brothers and friends. During high school she quickly developed office and bookkeeping skills. Her fingers flew over the keyboard as she marked her spot as one of the fastest typists in the state. She also won a state award for her shorthand speed. She graduated from Tooele High School in 1945 and furthered her education at a business college.

On March 17, 1951, Dorothy married her lifelong love, Vertis Carter Jr., a native of Tennessee. The marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on Oct. 14, 1964. The couple lived most of their married lives in Tooele before moving to Mount Pleasant for several years, then returning to Tooele. Wherever they were, Dorothy worked as the bookkeeper and office manager for her husband’s many business ventures. Her children laughingly say, “Our mom was a saint to put up with dad for as long as she did.” A lifelong active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Dorothy served as a Primary president, Relief Society president, and held a myriad of other positions in her ward and stake. She genuinely loved every church calling she had. Dorothy especially loved to go visiting teaching and was saddened over the past several months that she was not physically able to visit the sisters that had been assigned to her care. Dorothy loved traveling, camping, fishing, quilting and buying pretty shoes. She loved to record unusual tombstone etchings found in cemeteries during her travels. One of her favorite epitaphs was, “I told you I was sick.” Dorothy is survived by her husband, Vertis, of Tooele; daughter Mickie (Alan) Bradshaw of Erda; son Randy (Sarah) Carter of Mount Pleasant. She is also survived by a brother, Curtis Lougy of Tooele; seven grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren, with two more on the way. The great-grandchildren loved to visit and dress up in Grandma’s tiny clothing. Preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Bobby Lougy; great-grandchild Kayzlee Jean Carter; niece Linda Anderson, and nephew Justin Darr. A celebration of Dorothy’s life was held Friday, Jan. 2, 2015 at the Tooele 8th Ward. She was buried in the Tooele Cemetery. The family wishes to thank the members and leaders of the 8th ward, as well as Tate Mortuary.
