Obit Paul Elliott HowardPaul Elliott Howard, 78, passed away Feb. 15, 2021, at home with his family. Paul was born to Jewel and Evelyn Howard on Jan. 27, 1943, in his great grandfather’s cabin in Flint Springs, Kentucky. The snow was so deep that the doctor arrived by horse and buggy. The family moved to Louisville after his father returned from WWII and Paul graduated from Valley Traditional High School and the University of Louisville with a degree in English literature. Paul served 22 years in the US Army, including tours in Germany and Korea. After retirement he returned to school at APSU for social work and worked with adults with special needs until he retired again to spend many years in his favorite role the great Papa.

Paul married his lifelong love Margaret Sandage on June 4, 1965, and enjoyed 51 years raising a family and traveling the world until her death in 2016. Preceded in death by wife Margaret and son Andrew, he is survived by daughter Melaina Mansanarez (Duane); brother Tony Howard (Denise); grandchildren Morgen, Madeline, Chandler, Chloe, Paul, DJ (Meghan), Stephen (Hollie); eight great-grandchildren; and treasured brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews.

Paul left us many lessons: eat plenty of real cornbread and drink sweet tea, play basketball and tennis often, take a hike and hold hands, do any dangerous thing you like with your grandkids even if their mother tells you not to, wander, make friends out of strangers, if you know a song with a person’s name in it sing it to them, make one up if you need to, and always jump off the high dive.

Service will be held at Tate Mortuary in Tooele, Utah, at 11 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 20, 2021, with visitation starting at 9:30 a.m. Paul would be happy if you donated to Special Olympics Kentucky at 105 Lakeview Ct., Frankfort, KY 40601, to get more athletes on the playing field.

Obit Rodney LeRoy JonesOur beloved husband, father, uncle, grandpa and friend, Rodney LeRoy Jones passed away Feb. 12, 2021, at the age of 81 in Salt Lake City after a short illness. Rodney was born Nov. 30, 1939, to Herman and Merdies Jones in Cedar City, Utah. He attended Bountiful High School. He served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the New York, New York Mission. He attended the Stevens Henager Business College.

He married Pat Trombley and they later divorced. He married Ida Jones and they have been happily married for 37 years.

Rodney worked for the University of Utah for 35 years. He loved the University of Utah, but he also had a blue streak and he often wished for a hat that was half University of Utah and half Brigham Young University. He was always neutral when the two teams met in competition.

Rodney was a man of many interests. He loved to read and could get through a book in a day. He spent a lot of time on his genealogy and he could always tell you which relative was which and why it mattered.

Rodney loved to talk and visit with anyone and everyone and he was a great listener. Throughout his years he spent time as a scout leader. He loved hunting and fishing and guns. He enjoyed playing cards with his family members and he could overpower you with the game Rummy. He enjoyed classical music. He loved all his children and his grandchildren equally. His love was unconditional, and you knew he was a kind soul. He always spoke good of others and looked for the good in this world.

He had many who called him dad or grandpa and he loved it. Dad gave the best hugs, and you could feel his warm spirit envelop you in a net of safety. Dad was one of a kind and he loved all his children. He was the best dad we could ask for and we thank him for loving us.

Rodney enjoyed family trips and he loved the temple. His greatest joy was his family, both those living and those who went before. He will be truly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Rodney is survived by his loving wife Ida; his children Randy (Kami) Flyn, Wendy (Mike) Roney, Kerena (Leigh) Mayberry, Chantel (Joe) Stoddard, Keith Jones, and Cory Jones; 14 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren; his siblings Gaye (Blaine) Andersen, Art (Linda) Jones, Thaylan (Marie) Jones and Nancy (Jon) Stookey. In Memory of Steve Miner

We were young when

you asked me to dance.

We danced and had a beautiful daughter

and as we were dancing, we stepped

into our new home and dancing

turned into working hard and

growing up

and we created a beautiful son

and another beautiful daughter.

As we grew and worked and raised

a family, our dancing steps

slowed and “life” broke the two dancers

who then no

longer heard the music.

Rest in Peace, Steve

Always,

Laurie

Obit Janice Petersen Coon 2Janice Petersen Coon passed away Feb. 19, 2021, due to causes incident to age. She was 85 years old.

Obit Janice Petersen Coon 1Janice was born to Marvin Petersen and Blanche Fenton on July 7, 1935, in Hunter, Utah. She attended Cyprus High School and met her husband, Evan Coon, whose family lived down the street from hers in Hunter.

Janice and Evan married Oct. 12, 1956, and they were sealed for time and eternity in the Logan Utah Temple on Jan. 9, 1963. They made their home in Erda, Utah, where they ran a farm and raised their family. Janice served in many callings in the Erda Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including as the ward librarian, nursery leader, and very faithful visiting teacher. Janice was a mainstay in the Erda community and tended many of the kids who lived around her. She loved to help elementary school kids with their reading as a volunteer. She served as the president of the Utah State Cowbelles (now known as the Utah Cattlewomen’s Association), and worked at the Tooele Junior High cafeteria and later at EG&G.

Janice was beloved by her family. She especially loved her many grandchildren and was up for anything they wanted her to do. Whether it was playing a round of Chinese Checkers, going out for lunch, letting her grandkids sing “Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer” to her during the family Christmas party, or accepting the title of “Grandma America” during an impromptu beauty pageant for grandmas (where she was the only contestant and the title was for life) – she was a great sport about all of it. Her personality was larger than life and she had a great sense of humor. The greatest accomplishment she had was that she was a wonderful grandma and we all loved her for it. She continued to be a light in her family’s life, even as dementia took its toll.

Janice is survived by her brother Lamar Petersen of San Antonio, Texas; sister-in-law Stella Aston of Twin Falls, Idaho; six living children Glade (Ladean) Coon, Shelley (Alan) Johnson, Joan (Kelly) Painter, Joe Coon, Paula (Red) Lee, and Terri (Bryant) Pehrson; as well as her son-in-law Stephen Campbell; “borrowed” daughter Lesa Worwood Knyte; 24 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Evan Coon, her parents, her brother Glade Petersen, her daughter Cindy Campbell, and her grandson Alexander Johnson.

The family would like to thank the staff at Cottage Glen Assisted Living, especially the staff of the Memory Care Unit, for their compassionate care of our mother and grandmother.

Funeral services for Janice will be held Friday, Feb. 26, 2021, at 1 p.m., at the LDS church building at 410 Shelley Lane, Grantsville, Utah, with a graveside dedication to follow at the Grantsville Cemetery.

Obit Donna Jean Koford BrownDonna Jean Koford Brown, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2021, at the age of 92. She was born Nov. 25, 1928, in Tremonton, Utah, to Vaughn and Marr Ellis Koford. The family moved to Grantsville, Utah, in 1941. She attended Grantsville High School and graduated in 1946. She married Jack M. Brown on Oct. 26, 1947, and their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple on Sept. 3, 1954.

Donna was involved in the Dairy Wives Association, and was over the Dairy Princess pageant for several years. She belonged to various clubs including Beta Sigma Phi, Twentieth Century, and Jonathan Club, where she served the community. She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints serving in many positions. The last calling she had and dearly loved was that of ward librarian.

She loved to cook and bake and spend time in the kitchen. She worked for several years at the old Skyline Restaurant baking rolls and pies. She was an excellent cook, and you could always expect goodies when you came to her house, and no one ever left hungry. She fixed many meals for the men hauling hay on their farm. One of our favorite memories at Christmas time was her homemade candy and chocolates. Her sisters and mom would gather at her house to hand dip their chocolates because her basement was cold and the chocolate was very temperamental. She continued to dip even after moving to Idaho for several more years, having Jack stir the chocolate to melt it.

In 1978 Donna and Jack moved to Weiser, Idaho, where she resided until 2016. After breaking her hip, she came back to Grantsville to live with her daughter and son-in-law. She loved to sew and quilt. Every grandchild received a baby quilt and a large quilt when they graduated from high school. She was a very talented lady and her family was her whole life.

Donna is survived by her children Greg (Donna), Gary (Ann) of Weiser, Idaho, and Denise (Todd) Fawson of Grantsville; sisters Evelyn Brown, Lois Young, Maxine Allred, and Raylynn Jeffrey; 12 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Jack, her parents, and her brother Eldon Koford.

Funeral services for Donna will be held Tuesday, March 2, 2021, at 12 p.m., in the Clark/2nd Ward LDS chapel, 81 N. Church St., Grantsville, Utah. Visitation 10 to 11:30 a.m. prior to services. Interment in the Grantsville City Cemetery. Services are entrusted with Didericksen Memorial. Masks are required and social distancing will be practiced.

Obit Telma Joan Evans NewlandOur kind, tender hearted earth angel, wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend left us Feb. 27, 2021. Joan was born Dec. 16, 1935 in Tooele, Utah, to Ophir Robert Evans Sr. and Telma Atkin Evans. She was the oldest of their four children.

She was a devoted and faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints her entire life. Joan grew up in Tooele where she had many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends whom she absolutely loved. Her sister Judy was her best friend from the day Judy was born. She was in the 4H program where she learned many skills and made many projects. She played the violin and was in the Tooele High School Orchestra. She graduated in 1954. She attended two years at the College of Southern Utah in Cedar City. She only received one C the entire two years. The rest were As and a few Bs.

She was in her 20s when she learned to drive and got her driver’s license. She bought herself a blue Buick and never looked back. She loved to drive and took Stacey along with all her nieces and nephews wherever they wanted to go. Yellowstone National Park was one of her favorite places to visit.

She served a full-time mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was called to the Southern States Mission which consisted of Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. She told a story of a woman throwing boiling water out the door of her home at the two sister missionaries and before the water could reach her and her companion the water turned to mostly steam and neither of them where seriously hurt.

Joan worked for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at the Church Office Building. Also, Kennecott Copper Mine in their main Salt Lake City office. She spent most of her working life at the Tooele Army Depot, first as a key-punch operator and then worked her way up to a computer programmer for the mainframe computer. She was there for over 20 years where she gained many lifelong friends.

Once she retired her son-in-law Joe, who was in the military at the time, called her and said, “Why don’t you come and live with us?” So a new chapter began, first in Alaska; then on to Virginia; Kanab, Utah; and back to Tooele. For the next 11 years she was an intricatel part of her six grandchildren Chad (Angie), Lance (Brooke), Brandi (Kelly), Trudy (Jimmy), Matthew (Samantha), and Chelcee’s lives. June 26, 2004, she married the love of her life Robert Newland in the Salt Lake Temple and she finally gained the huge family she always wanted, making Stacey an official middle child.

Joan is survived by her husband Robert V. Newland; daughters Stacey (Joe) Bice, Moana (Kyle) Bouwhuis, Patrice (Bo) Thomas, Helen (Todd) Bird, Maureen Newland; sons Farrell (Laurie) Newland, Ken (Tricia) Newland, Carl (Jennifer) Newland, Kipp (Patricia) Newland, Shaun (Terri) Newland, James (Megan) Newland, Mike Bramwell; sisters Judy Morris and Nancy (Victor) Warr; brother Ophir Evans Jr; 71 grandchildren; and 48 great-grandchildren.

Obit James V. Sullivan1937 – 2021

Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin and friend died of acute myeloid leukemia March 1, 2021.

Jim was born in Wheeler, Montana, June 27, 1937, to James Henry Sullivan and Celia Maxine Prine Sullivan. He grew up as a farm boy in Montana with his sisters and cousins with whom he remained close to throughout his life. The family moved to Riverdale, North Dakota, where his father worked as a crane operator during the building of the Garrison Dam on the Missouri River. Jim graduated from Riverdale High School in 1955 and enlisted in the USAF.

Following basic training, he was stationed at the radar site atop Mt. Tamalpais near Mill Valley, California. In 1959 he was accepted into the aviation cadet program and graduated in the class of 60-D. The first airplane he ever flew was a jet. That was the beginning of an incredible Air Force career. Jim spent four years in the F-100. In 1963 while stationed with the 48th fighter wing at Lakenheath AFB in England he married Margaret Smith and together for 13 years, raised their daughters Sharleen and Diane. Jim had even more hours in the F-105D which he flew during his first tour in Vietnam. He was shot down Dec. 12, 1965, on a mission over North Vietnam but was rescued and flying again three days later. Jim flew a second tour in the F-4, and a third Vietnam tour in the SR-71.

Sept. 1, 1974, Jim set the world air speed record flying the SR-71 from New York to London in 1 hour 54 minutes and 56.4 seconds along with his reconnaissance systems officer Noel Widdifield. Jim retired from the Air Force on Jan. 1, 1985. In 1990 he married Nancy Hamilton, his love, whom he met years earlier in Japan and together they raised son Jeff and daughter Katie.

Obit Nabor B. MedinaNabor (Navor) Beningno Medina passed away March 1, 2021, peacefully at his home.

He will be greatly missed by his family and all his many friends.

Nabor was born Sept. 13, 1932, in Alamosa, Colorado, to Guillermo and Gertrudes “Gertrude” Mondragon Medina. He grew up in Taos, New Mexico, and was the fourth child of the 11 brothers and sisters. This family was very close, and had a loving and caring relationship for each other throughout their entire lives.

Nabor married Erlinda Suazo in Taos, New Mexico, and together moved to Tooele, Utah, in 1948. They had four wonderful children: Velma, Herbert, James, Anne — who were their parent’s delight.

Nabor has been a Tooele resident for over 70 years and showed a positive, happy influence in his community.

Nabor later married Barbara Lansdowne who sadly passed away. Nabor then met a light in his life, Ethel Bourget, and together enjoyed life at the fullest, laughing, traveling, dining out and being with family and friends.

Nabor worked at the Tooele Army Depot as an ammunition specialist for over 40 years when he retired. He had a “blast.” He was respected by his peers for his cheerful attitude and great work ethic.

Nabor was very dedicated to his Catholic religion and community. He lived the gospel of Christ in his actions. Nabor was a long-time member of the Knights of Columbus and held the position of Grand Knight in the Tooele chapter. He donated his talents and love to the Tooele community for many years. You would find Nabor with his church family helping with neighbors, friends, the city’s annual picnics, arranging bus trips to Wendover, and fund raising for any charity that was in need. Nabor was full of compassion and generosity.

Nabor enjoyed singing, playing the guitar and would sing whenever he had the opportunity. He delighted in being with others, fishing, hunting and bowling, and was a “600 Series” bowling master. He cheered on the Utah Jazz and Denver Broncos in every game. But most of all, he loved everyone and was admired by his family and many friends. He looked forward going out to having breakfast donuts with his brothers, Gene and Richard every morning.

He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings Claudia, Maria, Ida, Roy and Willie; his son Herbert; and son-in-law Woody Gober. Along with Erlinda, Barbara and Ethel.

He is survived by his children: Velma Medina Gober, James (Carolyn) Medina, Anne Medina, with Norman and Ella Bourget, Renee and Chris Hauser; his brothers, Gene and Richard Medina; including 12 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. He loved and cherished them all.

We give a warm thank you and appreciation for all those who helped and supported him with their many acts of kindness and visits. Nabor always appreciated these visits. And appreciation for his caring nurse Lucilla and for his daughters Anne and Velma, who also helped to encourage and care for him. And mostly, a thank you to his brother Gene for his tender care, concern and love towards Nabor.

Funeral services will be held Monday, March 8 at 11:30 a.m., at St. Marguerite Church, 510 E. Vine St., Tooele, Utah. Rosary is at 10:45 a.m.

Interment will be in Tooele City Cemetery immediately following. All are welcome to attend.
