Our best friend and brother Gary N. McAllister died peacefully in his sleep Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2024. He was 73.
He was born Aug. 27, 1950, in American Fork to Lee Rudy and Carma Wadley Atkinson. After his parents divorced, his mother married Stanley McAllister. Gary and his older sister Susan were adopted by Stanley.
Gary was active in baseball and football. He was raised in Tooele, graduated from Tooele High School, and worked at Tooele Army Depot until he retired. He loved Alaska fishing trips with his buddies, enjoyed golfing, eventually becoming senior club champion, and delighted in being a card shark. Gary was a longtime supporter of the Tooele County Jr. Livestock Show. We will always remember his integrity and willingness to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. Gary had a heart bigger than he was and loved those who welcomed him into their lives. If you knew Gary, you had the most loyal friend. He was an iconic and unforgettable man who will leave a hole in all our lives.
Gary was preceded in death by his mother Carma, father Stanley, and sister Susan Wolfe. He is survived by half-sister Judy Atkinson Evans, half-brothers Steve and Shane Atkinson, stepmother Betty Atkinson, and the many who considered him “Uncle Gary,” and Charlie – the llama.
Rest in peace, may you perfect your golf swing, and may the fishing in heaven be more than you expected!
Graveside services will be held Feb. 17, 2024, at 10 a.m., at the Tooele City Cemetery and will be preceded by a celebration of life at the Elks Lodge. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the local Elks Lodge in Gary’s name.
How ’bout them Cowboys!
