Obit David Spencer JohnsonDavid Spencer Johnson, 26, of Tooele, Tooele County, Utah, passed away unexpectedly in his sleep March 27, 2017. He was born on April 17, 1990, in Spokane, Washington, and moved to Tooele County in 1992. He was the son of Cherl McMahon and Steven D. Johnson.

David was a friend to many and loved by all. There were never any ill words spoken of him as he did not criticize anyone. He did not try to change anyone but accepted them as they were. He had a special spirit about him which enabled him to understand and help people with his kind words, his modest humor and his comforting presence. Almost everyone he befriended over the years considered him to be family to them and called him as such. Wherever David went, his two closest friends Joey and Devin were not far behind. In addition to David’s love for his friends he had an even greater, not-unspoken love for his son and legacy, Elysia. David’s son gave him purpose and an even greater reason to live and to love.

David is survived by his father Steven D. Johnson of Grantsville; his mother Cherl McMahon of Tooele; his son Elysia; his three half-brothers Bradley of Tooele, Nathan of Virginia and Thomas McMahon of Tooele; his paternal grandparents Stanley and Kathryn Jonson of Grantsville and maternal grandmother Dorothy Cantrel of Boise, Idaho, and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Obit LaVelle EastmanElsie LaVelle James Eastman died on April 7, 2017, of causes incident to age. She was born in Tooele, Utah, on Aug. 1, 1925, to Gilroy James and Elsie Ordina Mortensen. Growing up in that small town was enlivened by her neighbors, who were ‘double cousins,’ daughters of her father’s sister and her mother’s brother. Her other boon companion was Coalie, the family dog, who would meet LaVelle at school and walk her home every day.

She met Dan Moroni Eastman when she sold him a movie ticket at the Ritz Theater on Main Street in Tooele, and married him when he came home from service as a bomber pilot in World War II. They lived in San Francisco, then Elko and Ely (Nevada), while Dan was studying mortuary science, and settling in Salt Lake City, where she has lived ever since. LaVelle and Dan were divorced in 1975.

LaVelle is known for her artistry as a seamstress: her family has a notebook with pictures of the more than 100 wedding dresses she made over the years. She continued to sew until well into her 80s. She also has left a large amount of beautifully painted china and porcelain, as well as a number of finely executed watercolors.

Though she herself never drank, LaVelle got to know most of the bartenders in town when she was organizing the Ugly Bartender Contest for the Utah Multiple Sclerosis Society, where she worked for many years. She was also instrumental in putting together the MS Society’s annual “Utah’s Best Dam Bike Tour” event several times. LaVelle finished her working career as a secretary at the University of Utah’s Division of Continuing Education.

Owen was preceded in death by his parents, Wesley and Lois Barrus of Grantsville, Utah; Harry and Vera Miner of Tooele, Utah, along with many other loved ones and friends whom he is now with in the Spirit World.

Owen was born on Aug. 27, 1941, in Grantsville, Utah to Heman Wesley Barrus and Lois Brim Anderson. After graduating from Grantsville High School in 1959, he enlisted in the United States Navy (1959-1962). Following his military service, Owen served in the LDS Central British Mission (1962-1964). Upon returning home, he met and married his sweetheart Sherry Miner in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on June 11, 1965.

Shortly after their wedding, he began working as a cameraman for KUTV Channel 2 and then at the Tooele Army Depot. His family moved to Loveland, Colorado, where he worked initially for DURA Business Machines and subsequently began his 35-year tenure at Hewlett-Packard in Fort Collins, Colorado, as well as in the Lake Stevens Division in Marysville, Washington, for a few years. He enjoyed cycling, appreciating wildlife and serving others in whatever capacity he was needed. He could fix anything and loved doing this for anyone at any time. He served three LDS missions with his beloved companion, Sherry, and died in the service of the Lord: CES mission at the St George Institute of Religion at Dixie State (2004-2005), Technology Specialist at BYU Hawaii (2005-2007), and Facilities Management Group in St. George, Utah (2014-present).

The viewing will be held on Sunday, April 23, 2017, from 6-8 p.m. and Monday, April 24 from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the Sunset Stake Center, 82 N. Dixie Drive, St. George. The funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. Monday. The burial service will take place at the Tonaquint Cemetery, 1777 S. Dixie Drive, St. George, Utah, for close friends and family members.

The family would like to thank Mountain Point Medical Center, the Lehi Fire and Police Department and Mike Powell for their love and compassion extended during this time. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to LDS Perpetual Education or Temple Fund.
