Obit Brent Lee PetersonBrent “Rocky” Lee Peterson passed away on Jan. 5, 2017, one day after his 68th birthday, surrounded by his family in Grantsville, Utah. Brent was born to Wesley Alvin and Alice Wrathall Peterson on Jan. 4, 1949, during a heavy snowstorm. The story the family always told was that he was almost born on the road to Tooele on Rocky Ridge, so his family always fondly referred to him as “Rocky”. In true Rocky form, he followed the tradition by leaving us during a heavy snowstorm. He participated in football and baseball in high school, and was an all-region football player in his senior year. He always liked having “good times” with his high school buddies “Dude,” “Orbit” and Bob, and brothers Wylie and Errol. It can never be said he didn’t enjoy life.

After graduating from Grantsville High, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and completed his basic training in Fort Lewis, Washington. He was selected to be a paratrooper in the 82nd and 101st Airborne and completed his training in Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He served in the Tet Offensive in Vietnam, where he fought valiantly for his country, receiving two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star.

Brent was a master welder and worked for Utah Power and Light for 25 years. Later in life, he worked for Dave Christensen, where he made many fond memories and great friends.

He married Sheryl Wright and was the father of Nicholas (Vikki) Peterson, Camille (Kenny) Curtis and Alison (Nick) Crosby. They later divorced and he married Susan Rasmussen and was the father of Parker (Cassie) Peterson and the loving step-father of Brooke, Josh and Jamie. They later divorced.

Brent had many good friends from the very young to the very old. He never met anyone that he wouldn’t have given the “shirt off his back.” He was giving, loving, loyal and generous to a fault and is going to be missed by many, especially his four-legged pal “Gus.”

Rocky is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Errol and sister-in- law Peggy Peterson. He is survived by his older sister Lyda Gay “Gidy” (Roger) Hammond, his brother Wylie (Karla) Peterson, his children and his grandchildren Kaylie (Treavor) Buhl, Melissa (Kyle) Knight, Mackenzie Fait, Ashlynn and Paige Peterson, Olivia and Sophia Crosby, Kynlee and Baylor Peterson and great-grandsons Trig and Tripp Buhl.

Services were held Tuesday, Jan. 10 at the Grantsville West Stake Center.  Interment followed at Grantsville City Cemetery.

Wayne H. (Punch) Christiansen

Obit Wayne H. ChristiansenWayne H. (Punch) Christiansen was called to his Heavenly Father on Jan. 9, 2017. He was born on Oct. 28, 1937, in White Pine County, Ely, Nevada, to Byron Ray Christiansen Sr. and LaVerne Grantham. He was the fifth of six children and lived in Cherry Creek, Nevada, on the family ranches. When Wayne was 4, the family moved to Tooele, Utah, for work. During this time, Wayne contracted the dreaded polio disease, which left him with many challenges in his life. He missed out on many childhood activities because he had to learn how to walk, talk and regain the use of one arm after recovering from polio. As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Wayne attended church with his family and went to school while living in Tooele.

Making up for lost time and with the help of his older brother Max, Wayne decided to try his hand at boxing. Max was a professional AAU boxer and was able to help Wayne overcome the physical effects caused from polio. He won several matches including the Golden Gloves and this is where he earned the nickname “Punch.” Everyone that knows him seems to have a “Punchy” story. The rodeo was another interest that Wayne had and he and a couple of friends decided that they would give it a try. Riding bulls wasn’t easy, but Wayne loved the challenge.

In Tooele, Wayne met and married Helen Marie Copley. Wayne was a skilled brick mason and taught his two oldest sons the trade. He enjoyed watching the children and grandchildren as they participated in various activities. He also had a passion for the desert, sleeping under the stars, trapping and chasing the wild horses, cutting Christmas trees, picking pine nuts, hunting and prospecting. He loved getting together with family and friends for dutch oven cookouts and that is when he seemed to be the happiest. There was something he wanted, and that was for him and Helen to be remarried after many years of being separated. That was accomplished on Nov. 1, 2016, and that was a joyous occasion for the whole family. Cancer would be the last battle that Wayne wouldn’t win, but it gave him the opportunity to spend time with his family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his father, mother, brother Max Christiansen, sister Echo Hampton and many other close family members and friends. He is survived by the love of his life Helen Christiansen; daughters Toni (Danny) Dickman, Vicki (Keith) Cordova and Amy (Rick) Palmer; sons Byron (Bud) Christiansen, Bill (DeAnn) Christiansen, Clint (Kristi) Christiansen and James Ashley, 19 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. He is also survived by his brothers Byron Ray (Nina) Christiansen and Douglas (Pat) Christiansen; sister LaNile (Floyd) Bracken and sister in-law Jane (John) Copley.

Thank you to the Huntsman Center and Rocky Mountain Hospice for all their special care. Services will be held on Saturday, Jan. 14, 2017, at the LDS Stake Center located at 115 E. Cherry Street, Grantsville, Utah. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m.-noon prior to the funeral services which will be held at 12:30 p.m. Interment will follow at the Grantsville Cemetery. Services under the direction of Didericksen Memorial, 435-277-0050.

Obit Kenneth Clair LindquistWe are sad to announce the death of Kenneth Clair Lindquist, 85, of Pleasant Grove, Utah, on Jan. 9, 2017. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Nancy Hacking Lindquist; five children: David Kenneth Lindquist (Tina), Dianna Smith (Darrell), Julie Applegate (Mike), Jena DeHaan (Dan) and Jason Howard Lindquist (Rebecca); and three brothers: Thomas Tate (Patricia), Ed Lindquist (Sally) and Kent Lindquist (SannDee). He was preceded in death by one sister, Colleen Kling.

Kenneth was born April 1, 1931, in Mount Pleasant, Utah, to Olive Farrie Jacobsen and Kenneth Edward Lindquist. He grew up in Tooele, Utah, and spent many happy summers on his grandparents’ farm in Mt. Pleasant, where he learned to love farm life. He served a mission for the LDS Church in Hawaii. He grew to love and cherish the Hawaiian people. A few days after returning from his mission and just a week before leaving for the Army, he met his future wife, Nancy Hacking, in Tooele, Utah. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple on Sept. 3, 1954. While in the Army, he served as a drill sergeant, airborne ranger, and a Chinese linguist immediately following the Korean War. As a commissioned officer, he was trained both as a rotary and fixed-wing pilot and completed his active duty as a captain. After completion of 10 years active duty, Ken continued to serve in the U.S. Army Reserve and the Utah National Guard, retiring as a major in 1974. Following his active duty, he purchased an orchard in Santaquin and completed his college education at Brigham Young University, where he earned a bachelor of science degree in agronomy and a secondary degree in Asian studies. As a commercial airline pilot, he worked for American Airlines flying 747s and DC-10s for the next 25 years. In 1980, he moved to his beloved orchard in Pleasant Grove, where he has lived for the past 36 years. After retiring from the airlines in 1991, he was able to put his full time and energy into his true love — farming. He was widely known for his beautiful and delicious fruit and his agricultural knowledge, and happily shared his time and expertise with anyone in need. He spent many pleasant years doing what he loved. He was a devoted husband who showed great care for Nancy, and a wonderful father who showed his children how to work hard, and live a productive, happy life. Obit Charles Gene BryanCharles Gene Bryan, former resident of Stansbury Park, passed peacefully on Sunday, Jan. 8, 2017, at the home of his daughter and son-in-law Rebecca and Tony Hemming in Humble, Texas. Gene was born Sept. 24, 1927, to Hazeldean McDowall and Charlie Bryan in Garland, Box Elder County, Utah. He was the sixth of eight children. Shortly after his birth, the family moved to Michaud, Idaho, near Pocatello. Gene grew up knowing how to work hard and his early years were spent farming. Two of his older sisters died early in their married lives, and this had quite an impact on Gene and the entire family. This created a desire to love and nurture all of his family throughout his life.

Gene was a freshman in high school when Pearl Harbor was bombed. Patriotism was very high at the time and everyone wanted to do their part. Gene was not able to serve in the military because of his poor eyesight, but he supported the cause as he drove deliveries to the Civil Air Patrol Base in Pocatello. He graduated from high school in May 1945 with 38 students in his class. He continued his education and played football at Idaho’s Southern College of Education in Albion.

He met JoAn Eleda Spencer on Feb. 28, 1947. He described that summer as the greatest in all his life. They were married on Nov. 26, 1947, the day before Thanksgiving in Idaho Falls. They were blessed with three children: Charles Douglas, who was born on Jan. 1, 1949; Rebecca Eleda, who was born on Jan. 12, 1954; and Bruce Spencer, who was born on Gene’s birthday, Sept. 24, 1956.

Gene worked in various fields including the Department of Agriculture — where he was selected to serve on the Western Defense Board — and the Internal Revenue Service. He always made family his first and highest priority.

Gene was very involved in Boy Scouting, and through this involvement, he met many members of the LDS Church. He joined the church in 1959 and retained a firm testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ from that time forward. He has served in many callings, including that of Bishop, and has always done more than what was asked of him. He was always jovial and was a friend to all that knew him. He loved life and enjoyed people. Even first-time visitors to their home felt important and loved.

Gene and JoAn were blessed following retirement to faithfully serve several missions for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They served in the Family History Mission as well as on Welfare Square and the Church Office Building. They traveled and did auditing for the church.

Gene was preceded in death by his eternal sweetheart JoAn Eleda Spencer; his parents Hazeldean McDowall and Charlie Buchanan Bryan; and his siblings Henrietta Bryan, Delila Mae Bryan, Harlan Douglas Bryan, Lola Lafern Bryan, Gladys Muriel Bryan and Barbara Joy Bryan. He is survived by his sister Billie Barnard of Rockland; and his three children, Charles Douglas (Sue) Bryan of Blackfoot, Rebecca Eleda (Tony) Hemming of Humble, Texas, and Bruce Spencer (Sharon) Bryan of Cheyenne, Wyoming. He is blessed with 16 grandchildren and 45 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Saturday, Jan. 14 at noon at Anderson and Sons Mortuary, 49 E. 100 North in American Fork, Utah. A Viewing will be held prior to the service at 11 a.m.

1927-2017

Obit James Martin Burkett 1Obit James Martin Burkett 2James “Jim” Burkett, 89, died on Thursday at his home in Park City.

Jim was a man of very few words whose actions spoke volumes. He bravely served our country in World War II and the Korean War by claiming he was older than he was when he enlisted. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He is owed a debt of gratitude for our freedom.

He met the love of his life, Jean (Gualtieri) Burkett, in Tooele on Valentine’s Day, 1947. They were married in June 1947 and would have celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary this year. He converted to Catholicism in 1947 and was incredibly devout in his faith. He was often found kneeling in prayer by the side of his bed even when he was too weak to get up by himself. He suffered from debilitating and disfiguring disease for most of his adult life and never complained. Jim always had a quiet dignity that allowed him to bear his personal cross with grace and good humor.

Jim was an avid fisherman and outdoorsman who inspired a love of the outdoors and nature in all that knew him.

He was predeceased by his wife, Jean, in 2001 and is survived by his two daughters, Nancy (Park City, Utah) and Joann (Salt Lake City, Utah); his granddaughters, Nicole (San Francisco, California) and Terra (Salt Lake City, Utah); and his favorite niece, Dianna (Erda) and her daughter, Toni (Tooele), both of whom considered him their father and grandfather as he helped raise them.

A vigil to celebrate Jim’s life will be held on Thursday, Jan. 19, from 6-8 p.m. at St. Mary’s of the Assumption Catholic Church, 1505 W. White Pine Canyon Road, Park City. A rosary and funeral mass for Jim will be celebrated at St. Marguerite Catholic Church in Tooele, Utah, on Friday, Jan. 20, beginning at 11 a.m., with a visitation an hour prior. Interment to follow at the Tooele City Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to Tate Mortuary, 110 S. Main Street, Tooele, Utah, 84074, (435) 882-0676.
