Betty Jean McClimans Garcia, our loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great grandmother, and sister, died March 29, 2021, in Tooele from acute renal failure complicated by age. She was born Oct. 24, 1928, in Twin Falls, Idaho, to Emmett Henry and Judith Elnora Steenson. Betty was the second oldest of five siblings. Later, her father and mother divorced. Judith (Nora) later remarried. Betty now has two half-sisters from this marriage. Betty lived in Idaho on a farm. Her father raised and trained horses where she had many pleasant memories.

Betty married Wayne McClimans on Oct. 13, 1942. They had six children: three boys and three girls. They lived in Idaho and later moved to Manson, Washington. Betty was a great mother and raised her children mostly by herself. Betty had a very large garden and did a lot of canning. The garden was the main source of food which provided meals through the winter months. Betty was also a great baker, making her own bread, cakes, and cookies. Betty made the best scones ever! When it came to preparing meals, Betty was very creative and provided wonderful memories of her dishes.

By May 1960, Betty divorced Wayne and moved to Grantsville. Later, the family moved to Salt Lake City to be near her mother. After a short stay in Salt Lake City, the family moved to Lake Point and then to Tooele. Betty lived in Tooele for more than 50 years. During this time, she met her second husband, Jose Garcia, while working at the Tooele Army Depot. They married on June 17, 1967, and she stayed married to Jose until September 2011 when Jose passed away. Betty remained a widow for the past 10 years.

Betty was a faithful member of the LDS Church. She went through the Temple in 2012 and was sealed to her late husband.

Betty loved to go on trips and to travel when she could. Trips to Redding, California, to see her son, Roy, and to Palmdale, California, to visit her sister, Barbra, were most enjoyable. Betty also organized an Alaskan cruise for the whole family. It was a super hit and very memorable for Betty as well and the family. Betty also enjoyed the great outdoors and went camping whenever possible. She especially loved to go with her sons, Rick and Ronald, and their families.

Betty is survived by her sons, Richard W (Colleen) McClimans, Stockton, Utah; Ronald C (Sherry) McClimans, Rock Springs, Wyoming; Roy E (Diane) McClimans, Redding, California; daughter, Joan O (Richard) Sisneros, Tooele; and sisters, Barbra Tannon, Hazel Johnson, Judy Helford and Karen Downing. Betty has 16 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren. Betty is also survived by her Mini Pinscher, Bella (Chips), and cat, Socks.

Betty is preceded in death by her daughters, Margaret Ann Gray and Betty Jean Linneman; granddaughter, Michelle Stroud; grandson, Zacarri Dustin Sisneros; sisters, Margie Avery and Shirley Johnson; mother, Judith Elnora Earl; and father, Emmett Steenson.

Betty will be missed by all who knew her. She had such a sweet spirit and disposition. She was a very dedicated mother and a loving person.

The family would especially like to thank and recognize Sammy, Stephanie and staff of the activities department at Rock Mountain Willow Springs Nursing Facility in Tooele for their efforts to make Betty’s stay most enjoyable. Another special thanks to Christina Bennett, the hairdresser, who was so kind and considerate to Betty. Finally, special thanks to all the aides and personnel who helped Betty during her stay at Rocky Mountain.

Viewing will be Friday, April 2, 2021 at Tate Mortuary, 110 S. Main Street, Tooele, Utah, from 11:30 a.m.-12:45 p.m. Graveside ceremony will be at 1 p.m. in the Tooele City Cemetery.

Douglas Downs Gordon

Douglas Downs Gordon, 82, returned to Heaven on March 30, 2021, due to complications of coronavirus.

Doug was born on Feb. 3, 1939, in Murray to Ada Lucille and Elmer McLaws Gordon of Tooele. As a teenager he worked on Jim Bevan’s farm during the summers. He attended Tooele High School, where he participated on the swim team with his Uncle Leigh Pratt being coach. His uncle was a great example to him and helped his testimony grow about the Savior Jesus Christ.  Besides swimming, he played baseball, was an expert bowler — he had even considered going professional — and enjoyed fishing. After graduating from Tooele High School, he served a full-time mission to England and Scotland. He then had a job as a machinist, where he met his sweetheart, Colleen Wilson. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple on June 22, 1962. They have lived in various cities in Utah including Bountiful; Salt Lake City — where he attended the University of Utah; Centerville — where his father-in-law helped them build their first home; Erda; Ivins and Tooele.

Douglas was always actively serving his family and others. He enjoyed fixing things and was quite the perfectionist. He always took great pride in his work. He taught his family to work hard and showed by example. Some of his work endeavors were “Perfecto Tool and Cutter Grinding,” Gordon’s Furniture, Radio Shack, Tooele County Justice of the Peace, and The Kopy King.

Douglas loved the outdoors. You could always find him outside in his garden, experimenting with different kinds of vegetables and fruits.

He loved making his yard beautiful — always with a whistle on his lips. He enjoyed camping, fishing, taking walks with his sweetheart, and hiking among other outdoor activities. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, son and brother. We would often take family drives to see relatives, where we would sing together as a family. Dad loved music. He sang as a member of the Eleanor Kennard Chorale, played the ukulele, the guitar and the harmonica. We enjoyed many family vacations and have many fond memories of family reunions.

Douglas was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, having served two missions to the Philippines with his wife and held various callings. Among them were bishop, temple worker, and stake patriarch. We never questioned how Dad felt about Jesus Christ. He took many opportunities to share his faith with us and others.

Douglas is survived by his loving wife, Colleen; sons, Scot, Danny and Benjamin (Stephanie Gordon); daughters Ronna (Hal Wells), Cathryn (Todd Tew), Heather (Todd Christensen), Sunnie (Kenneth Smith) and Ann Rebecca (Mel Bingham), 36 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; and sisters Gloria Paakanen and Jerri Gordon. Douglas was deeply loved by his wife and family.  He will be greatly missed by all of us.

A viewing will be held on Monday, April 5 from 6-8 p.m. as well as on Tuesday morning from 9:30–10:30 a.m. with the funeral service to follow at 11 a.m. For those of you who would like to attend and will not be able to come in person, we will be having a Zoom meeting at churchofjesuschrist.org The viewings and funeral services will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel at 1050 W. Robert Jessie Twede

Obit Robert Jessie TwedeTo family and friends of Bob Twede, we’re saddened to announce that Robert Jessie Twede passed away suddenly March 26, 2021. He was born to Iona Larsen and Jesse Woodrow Twede in Tooele, Utah, Jan. 24, 1941. Robert was the youngest of four children.

Bob grew up in Tooele, an adventurous boy who loved hunting, fishing and spending time with his dad. He graduated from Tooele High School and it was there that he met the one and only love of his life, Phyllis Anderson. What started with a first date to Lagoon led to an eternal marriage in the Salt Lake Temple on Feb. 3, 1961.

Robert took a job with Stauffer Chemical and the couple made their home in Tooele for 25 years becoming parents to six children. Bob showed his love in many ways: a gift of flowers from the garden, kind words, a partner in work and play, and a lifetime of small and large acts of service. A frequent title of endearment given him by Phyllis was – Sweety Twede. It has been a lifelong love affair and one thing the family never doubted was Mother and Father’s love for one another and for their family.

Stauffer was bought by Chevron in 1986 and Bob was one of six who received a personal invitation to keep his job and so they moved the family to Rock Springs, Wyoming, where they would live until his retirement in 2000. He worked faithfully in the same job for nearly 40 years. After retirement, they moved back to Riverton, Utah, for 13 years and then on to St. George, Utah. Bob enjoyed a lifetime of hunting, fishing, golfing, woodworking, keeping his yard beautiful, traveling, spending time with family and in his spare time, doing cross words, games and puzzles of all kinds.

Others saw Bob as a quiet, humble, hardworking, and congenial person, which he was; but he was also so very funny with a quick wit, a deep thinker, very kind, and a dreamer with ingenuity and a can-do attitude. Eric, a son-in-law, commented that when Bob speaks you better listen, it’s going to be either very funny or very important, and so it was.

Bob was faithful in his testimony of Jesus Christ. He served in the church as a ward clerk, in a bishopric, as a stake missionary and a temple worker in the Jordan River Temple. Bob and Phyllis also served two missions together. The first was to Perth Australia in 2005 and then to the Inner-City SLC mission in 2011. Consistent with how he lived his life, his faith was more professed in what he did than what he said.

We will forever remember him and his life as one of faith, family, service and love. He is survived by his spouse Phyllis Twede; and his children and spouses Trevor and DeAnn Jones, Craig B Dawes and Andrea Dawes, Scott Twede, Robert Moore and Jennifer Moore, Eric Paulsen and Danyael Paulsen, and Devin Twede and Calindy Eilene Twede. He has 27 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Janeen Whitehouse.

A private family viewing and graveside service was held Friday, April 2, 2021. Interment will take place at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park South Valley.

Donald Oliver Silva Sr.

Obit Donald Oliver Silva SrDonald Oliver Silva Sr. passed away Monday, April 12, 2021, at the age of 84 surrounded by his family from complications associated with pneumonia.

Don was born Oct. 1, 1936, in Benicia, California, to Oliver and Mable Silva. He was the second of their five children.

He married Brenda Williams on Jan. 17, 1959, in Reno, Nevada. They moved their family to Grantsville in 1963 where they made their home and raised their five children.

Dad worked at the International Smelting and Refining Company until it closed in 1972. He worked for Marblehead Lime Company for several years before finding employment at NL Industries (US Magnesium). Dad was instrumental in organizing the Steelworkers Local 8319 and served as president for several years before taking a salary position in the maintenance department. Dad retired from US Magnesium after 26 years of service.

Along with his sons he started his own demolition company where he continued to teach his family and others the importance of hard work. He always took on the jobs nobody else wanted. If you wanted something done all you had to do was tell him it couldn’t be done and get out of his way. After 10 successful years he was finally able to retire and take Mom to the Oregon coast, a place they both loved.

Dad wasn’t happy unless he was working hard every day so even after “retiring” he always found ways to stay busy. He found many odd jobs and projects around Gold Beach, Oregon, where they lived. Besides his work he found a passion for fishing for salmon on the Rogue River where he spent many hours with friends and family. Some of his happiest days were spent on the river.

Over the past few years they were able to move back to Grantsville to be closer to the family they love so much. His work ethic stayed with him until his last days. He spent his last few days working to get his garden ready to plant and planning many other future projects. Dad’s proudest accomplishment was the hard work ethic he passed on to his children, grandchildren and even his great-grandchildren. All he ever expected was that if you claimed to be something, whether it be husband, father, friend, neighbor or worker, that you be a good one. He was a GOOD ONE.

Don is survived by his wife of 62 years Brenda; his sons Don Jr (Treasa), Andy (Lola), Ray (Angie), Bucky (Shelly), and son in-law Jerry Brown; brother Gary Silva and sister Alberta (Bob) Waddill; 14 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren with one on the way; and many nieces and nephews.

He was proceeded in death by his daughter Mary, his grandmother Mary Ann Silva who raised him, his parents, and brothers Richard and Mervin.

The family would like to thank Dr. Charles Holt for his many years of friendship and care. We also appreciate the kindness and care Dad received at Mountain West Medical Center and the U of U Medical Center. We would also like to thank our sweet Amber for the love and support she gave Gramps during his last few days.

A graveside service for friends and family will be held at the Grantsville City Cemetery at 11 a.m., Saturday, April 17, 2021. Due to fragile health conditions of some family members we ask that all current COVID guidelines be honored. Funeral arrangements are being handled through Didericksen Memorial.

Kathy Waltke

Obit Kathy WaltkeKathy Waltke passed away peacefully in her sleep early Wednesday morning April 14, 2021, accompanied by her son Mitch and her granddaughter Emilee.

Kathleen is the eldest of three daughters of Harold and Mildred Weber. She is survived by Lois (Dan) Sprague and Marilee (Deon) Krehnke.

In 1955 she married Carl Waltke. Together they had Michael (Melody), Deborah, and Mitchell (Diane). Michael preceded her in death several years ago and she often spoke of visiting him in recent years. With Carl she learned a love of bluegrass music and was so talented in dancing that many aspired to be like her and she was often asked to teach.

In 1975 she became a grandma and learned a new passion in life. She is survived by all her grandchildren Angela, Amber, Dustin, Emilee, Eric (Melissa), Jennifer (John) and Joshua (Melissa); as well as several great-grandchildren who always brought a big smile to her face. She gained the nickname Granny in the early 90s and it was her favorite.

At 50 years old she divorced, never remarried, and moved to Utah to begin a new life. She opened her own business, Future Shape, a tanning bed and toning table studio. At Future Shape she established her social network of friends and became a well-known lady of the community.

In 1990 she sold the business and applied to work at the new business in town, Walmart. She worked at Walmart for 27 years in various supervisor positions and making lasting friendships. She loved lunchtime gossip!

Saturday mornings were reserved for Junkin. She would scour the Tooele Transcript Thursday night for the most appealing yard sales and Saturday she would call family and friends to arrange carpool. Saturday nights she had a long-standing commitment to bingo at the Elks Lodge. Very few events could alter her bingo schedule and she often won.

Her other passion was her monthly trip to Wendover with the ladies. They enjoyed the senior meals and often had great stories of big losses or wins.

She retired at 79 and adopted Sparky from the Tooele animal shelter. She would take him on long walks through her trailer court and made many new friends with her feisty dog and beautiful smile. Two years later she lost her son to a tragic heart attack. It accelerated her dementia, and she required more care. Through family and friends she was able to live at home for 11 more months and the following April moved into Rocky Mountain Care.

RMC helped her maintain her independence and she often assumed she was still working at Walmart. She would join the staff for meetings and gather the mail and other items on her long walks through the hallways. She loved and was loved by all the staff. Sammie the activity assistant would relay fun stories and always made sure everyone had their favorite ice cream.

In February of 2021 she started showing decline from the stress of COVID restrictions and the tough decision to move her to an assisted living facility where family could visit was made. She moved into Our House Assisted Living and quickly became a part of the memory care family. She blossomed and had the best smiles and cheerful personality. The staff are amazing and loved it when her and Emilee would sit and enjoy an evening beer or a quick visit with Sparky.

Dear Granny, we love you and your beautiful smile. You brought so much love and life to so many. You never expected much more than just a good time. Whether it be happy hour at Mel’s house watching the birds or a fun night at bingo you were never angry. We are so grateful you got the opportunity to see the world and live independently.

A memorial service will be held at Tate Mortuary, 110 S. Main St., Tooele, Friday, April 16, at 3:30 p.m., with a visitation beginning a half hour prior at 3 p.m.

Any charitable donations can be made in her name to Primary Children’s Hospital.

Obit Shirley Jean Hansen NortonOn a peaceful spring evening Shirley Jean Hansen Norton closed her beautiful blue eyes and went to join those loved ones who went on before her.

On March 21, 1926, those beautiful blue eyes arrived in the arms of her loving parents Henry W. and Cornelia Fluit Hansen. Her adoring sister June thought Shirley was her baby when their parents brought Shirley home from the hospital on June’s birthday. They formed an unbreakable bond. Her two older brothers Wally and Bob Hansen always loved and protected her.

After graduating from the University of Utah she became the biggest Utah sports fan ever (not BYU)! After teaching for a year in Randolph, she hitched one more final ride home on the milk truck to pursue Bill.

Her family gave her away May 22, 1950, in marriage to Bill. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple by President Spencer W. Kimball who sealed their love for eternity.

Their marriage was blessed with four beautiful children: Becky, “the talented” (Glen) Murray; Richard, “the cowboy”; Shirley, “the boss” (Ken) Oltmanns; and Tim “the athlete.”

She discovered her second family at Tate Mortuary where she retired after 38 years at the age of 86.

She is survived by her beautiful girls, Becky and Shirley, 14 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and five great-great fifth generation grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, her loving husband Bill, sons Richard and Tim, and her granddaughter Elaine.

In lieu of flowers Mom would love for you to donate to your local food bank.

Viewing and funeral will be held Friday, April 16, 2021, at Tate Mortuary, 110 S. Main St., Tooele. Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., followed by the funeral at 1 p.m.

Obit Ronals S. McFarlandRonald Scott McFarland passed away peacefully April 13, 2021, in Tooele, Utah.

Ron was born in Columbus, Ohio, Aug. 28, 1931, to Robert and Mildred McFarland. He grew up in Ohio and spent many summers at Diamond Lake in Michigan with his parents, sister Judy, friends, and extended family.

Ron attended Western Michigan University and worked at the Tooele Army Depot, retiring in 2004.

He was a veteran of the Korean War and will be buried with military honors.

Ron married Norma Stark in 1973 after meeting on a trip floating through the Grand Canyon. They have two daughters, Erin and Amy.

Ron wasn’t happy unless he was working and kept himself busy puttering around the house and yard. If he didn’t know how to fix something, he would continue trying until he figured it out — this usually included using his extended array of collected screws, nuts and bolts. Ron felt there was a use for everything and any scraps from projects should be kept, because you never know if you will need it one day. He fixed many toy trucks and cars over the years as his grandsons knew that Grandpa’s fix-it-shop was always open! Animals held a special place for Ron and he would make sure any stray cats around his house had food and a warm place to stay. He enjoyed sailing and skiing; many happy memories were made skiing at Park West with his daughters. Daily five-mile walks were a priority to Ron no matter what the weather was like and he walked daily until his stroke in 2012.

Ron was preceded in death by his parents and sister Judith Fish. He is survived by his wife Norma; daughters Erin Lloyd (Mike) and Amy Teague (Will), both of Tooele; and three grandchildren, Lewis Lloyd, Jacob Lloyd, and Seth Teague. He also leaves a brother-in-law Jim Fish, several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A small graveside service was held Tuesday, April 20, at the Tooele City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers please donate to your local animal shelter.
