George Elwood Frailey, Jr., was born March 13, 1942, in Tooele, Utah, to George Elwood Frailey and Patia Hendrickson Frailey in the old Vine Street Hospital, just up the street from where he grew up and around the corner from the home he lived in where he passed on Sept. 8, 2024. He would tell us all “I walked home from the hospital.” George passed away on his own terms in his home, where he has lived for the past 24 years.

George grew up on Pinehurst Street just up from the 5th Ward church. When he was about 10, he started helping his dad with plumbing jobs around Tooele. He liked to say that threading 2-inch pipe made him “pretty strong.” He bought his first car at the age of 14 for $2. He and Cousin Frank Frailey pushed it up and down the street trying to get it running and never could. He said, “we didn’t know anything about cars!” He bought his next car right away; he washed every window in the Kirk Hotel for money to buy a battery for that car. He parked the car at Harris Elementary down the street from his home, because he didn’t want his parents to know he had it. George rustled at the smelter when he was 16 years old and knew the value of a hard day’s work. George also worked at Mantes Chevrolet in Tooele washing cars and doing whatever was needed. The highlight of that job was getting to deliver a 1958 Corvette to Salt Lake City. He said it was “really fast.” George went to work at Dugway Proving Ground in 1960 where he learned some heating, refrigeration and electrical skills. He then went to Tooele Amy Depot as a heavy mobile equipment mechanic and worked his way up to supervisor in the Motor Pool, Rail Shop and finally in the Maintenance Directorate where he was foreman over that mission area when he retired in 1993 with 33 years of service.

George married Loris A. Hanson and from that marriage daughter Allison Kathleen was born in 1962, and son Paul Elwood was born in 1964. Allison has been by his side for the past many years and was tireless and selfless, giving him the best life he could have. George had Paul remodel a room every couple of years to ensure a lot of visits. Grandson Jordan also got to work on the “George projects” and did great work and was great company. George loved his sisters more than anything and they visited him right until the week he passed.

George also enjoyed watching his granddaughter Lauren play softball and attended a few games (rain or shine). When he couldn’t get around much anymore, he watched girls’ softball on TV.

There are so many other things to mention about George that cannot “fit” into an obituary. His family and his friends know and remember them all and will have those memories with them always. George was larger than life in many ways and will be missed dearly by all of those who had the pleasure of knowing him.

George is survived by his daughter Allison Turner (Tom); son Paul Frailey (Tracy); sisters Danna James, Coralee Erickson; grandchildren Stephanie Busico, Greg Lloyd, Jordan Gamble, Lauren Frailey, Erin Frailey, Elliot Frailey, Teresa and T. J. Turner; great-grandchildren Gabe Rael, Jonas Turner, Havyn Vargas and Maxine (Max) Spendlove, with another great-granddaughter on the way.

George was preceded in death by his parents George E. Frailey, Sr. and Patia H. Frailey, his sisters Beverly Callister and Patia Hansen, grandson Zachary G. Gamble.

The family would like to thank many of the care providers from Rocky Mountain Hospital, Solstice Medical Group and Lincare who helped George in his final days.

Visitation/viewing will be held Saturday, Sept. 14, 2024, at Tate Mortuary, 110 S. Main St., Tooele, Utah, from 12:30 – 1:45 p.m., with funeral services following at 2 p.m. Graveside will follow at the Tooele City Cemetery.
