G. Maurice Van Vleet, age 94, passed away Aug. 7, 2015, at his home. Born Sept. 16, 1920, in Hudson, Wyoming, he was the fourth son of Russell Eugene and Nancy Lavina Stewart Van Vleet.
He married Dorothy Mabel Baxter on Aug. 6, 1943 (later divorced). Together, they had five children. Dad later married Lorraine Black and she precedes him in death. Maurice attended schools in Garfield and Magna. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in January 1942, at the start of World War II. He served in American Samoa and aboard the USS General H.F. Hodges in the Asiatic-Pacific and European areas. He was honorably discharged in January 1946. Maurice also served with the Utah National Guard in Tooele as a master sergeant for many years and was honorably discharged in April 1967. Dad had a love for flying and in 1947 he received his private pilot’s license. He had a talent and love for music and dancing. Dad could play the piano, organ and harmonica by ear, which he used to entertain family and friends. He had a passion for automobiles and always had the finest cars. Dad had a strong work ethic which he passed on to his family. He retired from the Tooele Army Depot after 30-plus years. He was always active and involved in his community. He will be greatly missed. He is survived by his brother, Leland (Beverly) Van Vleet; children, Lyn (Vern) Anthony, Susan (Jim) Benson, Steve (Jill) Van Vleet, Marsha (Kevin) Jennings and Kelly Clarke; 14 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2015, at Redwood Memorial Mortuary, 6500 S. Redwood Road, West Jordan, Utah, with a viewing one hour prior. Interment to follow.
