Obit Karyl Ruth Maynard“Aunt Karyl”

Karyl Maynard was called home during the night of July 10, 2021. She had been ready to reunite with her husband Phil Maynard since his passing in 1995. Karyl was born July 17, 1930, to Kenneth and Ruth Stapher in New Hampton, Iowa. She attended elementary schools in New Hampton and Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, before her parents moved to Tooele in 1946. She graduated from Tooele High School with the class of 1949 and began working at the Tooele Army Depot (TAD) in 1950.

Early in her TAD career Karyl met Phil (Millard F.) Maynard Jr. He had been assigned there as he returned from the Korean War as an Army Air Corp equipment operator. Phil was the love of her life and they married April 3, 1954, in Elko, Nevada. She had a variety of positions at TAD, retiring in 1977 as a chauffeur in the motor pool.

Karyl was active in numerous organizations with Phil and has remained so since his passing. Her involvement included activities with the Western Shrine Club and Eastern Star-Tooele Chapter #25; Lady Elks, Ladies of Moose, Eagles Ladies Auxiliary, Tooele Gun Club, Ladies Bowling League, and Tooele Arts Festival, Tooele Travelers Good Sam Club to name a few organizations. At the time of her retirement, she and her parents became involved in the Tooele Smeltermen’s Lodge (Tooele County Senior Center). She was especially proud of being involved in the establishment of Canyon Cove, a 24-unit housing complex for seniors from planning to dedication in 1985. Another proud time was when Tooele City Mayor Debbie Wynn named her the Grand Marshall for the 2019 Independence Day Parade.

Karyl and Phil had no children of their own. However, they had many children throughout their lives. Their home and yard were always a safe place for neighborhood children as popsicles or suckers were constant attractions.

She is survived by her sister Sharon Cook, Cedar Fort, Utah; last surviving Stapher cousin Dwight Stapher, Flandreau, South Dakota; and close friends Bruce and Susan Cummings; “surrogate grandmother” to Brian (Lauren) Cummings, Meridian, Idaho; Angie (Nick) Leonelli, O’Fallon Illinois, and their families; four nieces and nephews of the Wade Cook family, Cedar Fort; Maynard family nieces and nephews in Ohio, New Jersey, Washington State, and Florida; and a special nephew Kevin Kirkland (Carolyn) and family, Knoxville, Tennessee.

Karyl was preceded in her passing by her husband, parents, six sisters-in-law, father- and mother-in-law Millard F. Maynard Sr. and Elva Maynard, brother-in-law Wally Cook, nephew Wade Cook, and several Maynard nieces and nephews.

Earlier this year, Karyl resided at an apartment at Our House Tooele Assisted Living Center. Karyl’s family and friends wish to express appreciation to the staff and residents for their care, love, and fellowship. We all wish to thank the staff at Valley Family Medical practice and the Mountain West Medical Center for their care.
